About the Role
The University of Michigan, School of Nursing (UMSN), Office of Undergraduate Studies is seeking an Undergraduate Program Advisor. This position will engage in the advising process to support student progression and success, perform extensive file review, assist with monitoring advising processes to meet diverse student needs, and coordinate undergraduate events.
Responsibilities
- Undergraduate Student Advising (65%)
- Conduct individual student assessments and tailor success strategies for diverse student populations.
- Manage a one-on-one student advising caseload, conduct sessions, and document outcomes in the official system.
- Assess and prioritize student concerns to inform meeting agendas.
- Assist students with evaluating degree minors, concentrations, and career exploration in nursing for long-range academic and career planning.
- Interpret policies and degree requirements to recommend appropriate paths forward.
- Determine when student concerns require escalation and make independent assessments.
- Identify and initiate referrals to campus partners (e.g., financial aid, counseling, disability services) based on student needs.
- Implement academic success strategies through individualized and group advising, including identifying academic, career, and economic resources.
- Degree/Program Coordination (10%)
- Independently evaluate progress toward degree completion and build multi-term plans (e.g., electives, minor sequencing).
- Determine applicable requirements based on catalog year and program rules.
- Recommend course sequencing and workload balance on a term-to-term basis.
- Review academic records to ensure compliance with degree requirements and progress.
- Assist students with national and international licensure.
- Academic Monitoring (10%)
- Monitor and assess academic indicators (e.g., progress reports, early alerts, attendance, grades) for assigned caseload.
- Initiate student contact, conduct interventions, and maintain documented action plans.
- Evaluate unique situations and select appropriate interventions (e.g., study plans, tutoring referrals, course load adjustments).
- Policy Petitions (5%)
- Apply established policies and procedures for petitions.
- Work with students on petition requests, collect documentation, and advocate for approvals where required.
- Make recommendations to committees/administrators based on policy and precedent.
- Update student plans post-decision on petitions.
- Career Activities (5%)
- Coordinate and engage in student services events, including:
- Career Fairs
- Career Seminar Series
- Welcome Week Activities
- Commencement
- Resource Fairs
- Coordinate and engage in student services events, including:
- Additional Responsibilities (5%)
- Use advising technology to schedule appointments, review transcripts/degree audits, early warning grades, and record advising notes.
- Orient students to academic programs, university services, and policies.
- Help develop and maintain wellness programs.
- Meet with Instructional Design and Central departments to discuss student communication and advising methods.
Supervision is received from the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
Requirements
- A Bachelor’s degree is required.
- Minimum of two to three years of advising experience, with higher education advising experience required.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly and concisely across various mediums.
- Strong interpersonal, presentation (large and small groups), and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse groups.
- Demonstrated ability to collect, manage, analyze, and present data.
- Analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to manage multiple demands and prioritize workload effectively.

Schedule
8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Some occasional weekend and evening hours may be required.
