Undergraduate Internship - Engineering

About the Role

The Gas Transfer Systems (GTS) Group (Q-7) is seeking an Undergraduate Student to fulfill a broad range of challenging assignments in support of the GTS mission. The successful candidate will be mentored in a two-phased approach: 1) researching and planning for reactive materials in a glovebox; 2) understanding material requirements for a nuclear facility.

As the design authority for Gas Transfer Systems (Q-7), the team provides engineering and technical expertise to develop and deploy innovative gas transfer technologies critical to the nation's nuclear deterrent. The Q-7 team consists of engineers, technologists, and technicians engaged in interdisciplinary projects spanning conceptual development through system deployment and mission execution.

The Engineering Undergraduate Student (UGS) Program offers paid summer and year-round internships for undergraduate students in a variety of disciplines. The program provides mentoring, hands-on technical experience, and professional development opportunities through a formalized work plan complementing the student's chosen area of study.

Responsibilities

• Support the GTS mission through challenging assignments across disciplines.
• Participate in a LANL project with a focus on researching and planning for reactive materials in a glovebox.
• Understand material requirements for a nuclear facility.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate program in any engineering discipline (e.g., Mechanical, Electrical, Nuclear, Materials, Aeronautic, Chemical, Civil, or Environmental).
• Enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours (or full-time equivalent) in an accredited degree program (or international equivalent). Entering freshmen must provide documentation indicating matriculation into a suitable undergraduate degree program.
• Cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
• U.S. citizenship is required for a Q clearance, except in extremely rare circumstances.

Qualifications

• Computer programming in support of engineering design, data acquisition, analysis, or machine learning.
• Fabrication and testing techniques relevant to your engineering field(s).
• Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) experience.
• Laboratory or shop experience demonstrating attention to detail and commitment to safety.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills in a professional scientific context.
• Commitment to achieving results in a complex social and organizational setting.

Work Location

The work location for this position is onsite in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Additional Details

This position requires a Q clearance, which involves a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government. Selected applicants must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required.

The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Use or possession of marijuana, even if legal under state law, will result in termination of employment.
