About the role

The Undergraduate Academic Advisor in the College of Business counsels students on their educational and academic goals. The role involves providing comprehensive advisement to prospective, new, and continuing students by analyzing complex and sensitive situations, determining student needs, and deciding how best to meet them. The Advisor upholds and maintains the high standards of the University and College’s programs, working independently to acquire information, evaluate multifaceted concerns, and make decisions that directly impact students’ successful completion of their program.

The COB offers four graduate degrees and one undergraduate degree and has been accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) since 1963, a hallmark of excellence achieved by only 5% of colleges worldwide. The COB Office of Student Engagement (OSE) supports students throughout their business student experience at Sac State, from applying to the major through graduation.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze complex and sensitive student situations to determine needs and appropriate courses of action.
  • Advise students individually and in groups on academic and educational goals.
  • Interpret and evaluate student concerns, define problems, and project consequences of various actions.
  • Carry out professionally complex assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Review student transcripts and apply knowledge of articulation agreements.
  • Maintain confidentiality and work effectively with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Conduct group presentations and adjust approaches in response to rapidly changing circumstances.
  • Use computerized schedules, calendars, and student tracking/registration systems.
  • Uphold the standards of the University and College’s programs.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution.
  • Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.
  • A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may substitute for one year of experience.
  • A doctorate degree with appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may substitute for three years of experience for positions with major counseling responsibilities.
  • Experience working with prospective, new, and continuing college students.
  • Familiarity with community college transfer students and experience working with target populations such as first-generation and probationary students.
  • Knowledge of basic academic advising procedures and organizational structure of the College of Business and University.

Skills

  • High degree of judgment, persuasiveness, and professional skills in student advising and admissions.
  • Strong written, organizational, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to use PC, printers, calculator, copy machine, PowerPoint, Excel, word processing, and internet/web-based programs/software.
  • Ability to act independently, maintain confidentiality, and foster an inclusive work environment.
  • Commitment to maintaining a welcoming and inclusive environment for diverse colleagues and constituents.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to travel and work early mornings, evenings, and weekends for special events.
  • Experience coordinating and conducting student outreach and recruitment events.
  • Familiarity with University academic and computing environments (e.g., Financials, Human Resources, Student records, CMS).

Pay

Anticipated hiring range: $5,540 – $5,795 per month (full-time, 12-month pay plan). CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,540 – $7,893 per month.

Schedule

Full-time, Monday – Friday, 8 am – 5 pm; occasional weekends and evenings.
