Unarmed Security Guard

About the role

The Unarmed Security Guard maintains high visibility on college property to help deter crimes against students, staff, and property and to assist the Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC) Police Officers in providing a safe College environment. This position performs unlocks, delivers messages, parking enforcement, jump starts, and escorts, working closely with the KCKCC Police department.

Responsibilities

• Follow college protocols, policies, procedures, and training to safeguard students, staff, faculty, and visitors at all KCKCC locations.
• Patrol and inspect interior and exterior of KCKCC locations; perform routine and emergency unlocking/locking of facilities, security checks, and provide security services during events.
• Identify suspicious activity and ensure safety on foot, bike, cart, or department patrol vehicle.
• Contact police or fire departments in emergencies and provide support (directions, building access, scene security, etc.).
• Observe, report, and investigate suspicious vehicles, people, or activities; complete clear, concise, and accurate incident reports.
• Enforce college regulations for day and evening activities; check exterior lighting and emergency access routes.
• Be familiar with safety, security, and emergency-related training (e.g., weather-related, fire, medical, CPR, AED, evacuations).
• Assist with providing general information to the college community and guests.
• Wear department-issued uniform or approved attire daily.
• Assist in developing forms and procedures for college safety and security.
• Participate in internal and external meetings as necessary.
• Maintain confidentiality of all departmental, police, and college information.
• Implement and follow all College health and safety policies, including Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan precautions.
• Report safety hazards or maintenance issues promptly.
• Operate equipment including portable radios, computers, closed-circuit and access control systems (e.g., install cameras, pull wire for camera/alarm installs, work with fire systems, make keys, install locks, monitor video systems, police radio systems, and emergency text messaging systems).
• Interact positively and professionally with students, staff, faculty, visitors, and emergency personnel using tact, discretion, and courtesy.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police or their designee.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Valid driver’s license and a clear motor vehicle record.
• Ability to work in all weather conditions.
• Must work in noisy and crowded environments with numerous interruptions; requires stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, and turning.
• Report writing.
• Must be able to work a variable schedule to meet operational needs, including evenings and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications

• Degree in Criminal Justice.
• One (1) or more years’ experience as a security guard or related role.
• Experience using Microsoft Office products.

Skills

• Knowledge of campus buildings and grounds.
• Operational knowledge of computer-aided dispatch, fire, camera, and door access systems.
• Strong reading, writing, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions and read simple diagrams.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• High energy, self-starter with attention to detail.
• Ability to develop and maintain excellent working relationships across the organization.
• Commitment to working with a diverse student and faculty population.
• Understanding of community policing within a multi-cultural, urban community college setting.

Schedule

40 hours per week, shifts vary depending on location. Hours range from 7:00 am – 9:00 pm, Monday – Friday. May require evening and weekend hours.
