This is a part-time, PRN (as-needed) position located at UMMC Greenwood.

About the role

The patient care tech (PCT) assists with patient care and performs services requiring technical and manual skills on individual patient needs within the scope of practice under direct supervision of the registered nurse. This position primarily works with an acutely ill through rehabilitating adolescent to geriatric patient population.

Responsibilities

  • Stock supplies, maintain equipment, and report malfunctions.
  • Transport patients and monitor vital signs/pain.
  • Provide patient hygiene and comfort measures, assist with procedures, and fulfill nutritional needs.
  • Observe and report patient behaviors while respecting patient/family rights.
  • Safely and competently use equipment in the provision of department services per scope of practice.
  • Contact consults, facilitate transfers to higher levels of care, obtain imaging films, and answer telephones.
  • Order clerical supplies and maintain unit supplies inventory.
  • Perform or assist with treatments, procedures, and medications as ordered by the physician, approved and supervised by a nurse, and allowed by state law (e.g., EKGs, monitor/interpret cardiac rhythms, record strips, notify nurse/physician of rhythm changes).
  • Assist with simple procedures, room set-up, suture removal, casting/splinting.
  • Respond to intercom requests and obtain needed services from nurses, physicians, and other hospital personnel.
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment by turning over rooms, removing equipment, complying with procedures/rules/regulations, and adhering to infection control policies/protocols.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years of experience in an acute care setting, stand-alone ER, or military infirmary as a nursing assistant, medical assistant, monitor tech, emergency medical technician, or similar health profession; or completion of the first semester of an LPN, paramedic, or RN program; or completion of an EMT, LPN, paramedic, or RN program; or currently employed as a UMMC Nurse Extern; or completion of a Nursing or Medical Assistant course.
  • CPR/BLS certification required within three (3) months of hire.
  • Willingness to support both the Grenada and Lexington campuses when needed.

Skills

  • Understanding and use of medical terminology.
  • Phlebotomy training.
  • Knowledge of basic tasks such as phlebotomy, suture removal, procedure set-up/breakdown, casting/splinting, and stocking.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of computer systems, tools, and programs.
  • Bilingual preferred.

Physical and Environmental Demands

  • Occasional exposure to unpleasant environments (e.g., high noise levels, heat, cold).
  • Frequent handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment.
  • Frequent exposure to biohazardous conditions (e.g., risk of radiation exposure, bloodborne pathogens, fumes, airborne particles, toxic/caustic chemicals).
  • Occasional working hours beyond regularly scheduled hours.
  • Constant travel to offsite locations.
  • Frequent activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature.
  • Constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality.
  • Occasional lifting and carrying of more than 100 pounds.
  • Occasional climbing and crawling.
  • Frequent crouching, stooping, kneeling, pushing/pulling, reaching, sitting, standing, twisting, and walking.
