Ultrasound Technologist, Per Diem

Per Diem position located at Melrose Wakefield Hospital.

About the Role

This role focuses on using various imaging techniques and practices to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients, specializing in ultrasound duties. The technologist utilizes ultrasound technology to provide images of internal body structures. This is an experienced-level clinical technologist role requiring specialized knowledge and skills gained through vocational education, training, and experience. Works under moderate supervision, handling routine problems while occasionally requiring interpretation or deviation from standard procedures.

Responsibilities

• Performs high-quality diagnostic ultrasound exams and special procedures under physician and/or radiologist direction, using high-frequency sound waves to investigate internal aspects of the human body.
• Sets up and operates ultrasound equipment, manipulating transducers and adjusting console dials to obtain clear recordings of specified body sections.
• Records each examination and assists radiologists in interpretation by describing anatomy, anatomical locations, and acoustic characteristics.
• Compares previous ultrasounds to current exams, documents findings, and compiles results for radiologist dictation.
• Assists physicians and/or radiologists with special procedures, including biopsies, breast localizations, amniocentesis, aspirations, paracentesis, thoracentesis, hysterosonograms, and other ultrasound-guided procedures.
• Informs supervisor of equipment problems and safety issues.
• Covers on-call shifts as per policy, arriving at the hospital within one hour when called.
• Covers a minimum of hospital-recognized holiday shifts as per policy.
• Performs related department duties as required, working independently and exercising judgment, ingenuity, and initiative.
• Provides high-level service to all customer groups, exhibiting excellent customer relation skills to patients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers.
• Educates patients professionally about exam expectations and timeliness.
• Ensures patient expectations of service are exceeded and remains unprejudiced regarding race, color, creed, citizenship, sexual preference, economic status, disabilities, appearance, or age.
• Responds calmly and appropriately to changes or stats in the work schedule.
• Cooperates with co-workers and management to maintain an atmosphere conducive to high-quality patient care.
• Actively participates in department quality improvement and assurance initiatives.
• Assumes responsibility for designated areas and/or procedures as required.
• Maintains and monitors department supplies.
• Attends mandatory meetings.

Requirements

• Associate’s degree or two-year certificate program in Ultrasound.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
• Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ARDMS).

Preferred Qualifications

• One year of work experience as an ultrasound technologist.

Skills & Abilities

• Proficiency in medical terminology and clerical skills.
• Expertise in OB/GYN, small parts, venous, carotid, and abdominal ultrasounds.
• Experience with procedures requiring ultrasound guidance (e.g., biopsies, amniocentesis, aspirations, paracentesis, thoracentesis, hysterosonograms).

Physical Requirements

• Frequent standing, occasional sitting and walking.
• Lifting of 30-35 lbs., pushing, and maneuvering equipment.
• Manual dexterity for operating echo equipment and computer keyboards.
• Ability to see echo screens and reports.

Pay

The base pay range for this role is $44.17 - $56.21 per hour.
