Job Summary

The Ultrasound Technologist primarily performs the technical aspect of diagnostic ultrasound studies. This position receives patients, explains procedure methods, positions patients, selects and sets technical factors, sets up and adjusts accessory equipment required, and sets technical parameters necessary for the requested examinations. Individuals in this position will be certified sonographers by the Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (R.DM.S.). Individuals perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures which vary in complexity because of the varied anatomy and the physical and emotional condition of the patient. Sonographers will interface with sophisticated ultrasound and computer equipment used in image acquisition and processing to produce diagnostic quality studies.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Determine test procedure according to the purpose of the examination and review prior imaging exams.
  • Explain procedure to patients and assists patients in the proper positioning for the test.
  • Select transducer and make equipment adjustments according to the nature of test, depth of field, and other test specifications.
  • Enter test data and patient information into the computer to become part of the test record.
  • Conduct actual test procedures. Moves handheld transducer over specified area of the body and while observing on the monitor selectively record images for the patient’s permanent record.
  • Record diagnostic data onto PACS.
  • Check equipment on a regular basis to ensure proper operation.
  • Report equipment malfunctions, initiates and coordinates service support.
  • Maintain paper and electronic patient records.
  • Independently perform standard examinations.
  • Confer with radiologists to establish requirements for nonstandard examinations.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and initiate procedures to replenish stock and to receive stock supplies.
  • Provide assistance within the ultrasound work unit to facilitate operational efficiency.
  • Absorb and transfer patients using proper lifting techniques, requesting lifting assistance as needed.
  • Perform ultrasound guided needle procedures using sterile technique.
  • Ensure equipment is in proper working order.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exercise initiative, critical thinking and independent judgement.
  • Proficient in PACS, Digisonics structured reporting system or related software.
  • Thorough understanding of information technology and information technology systems.

Education and Experience

  • Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in diagnostic ultrasound (required).
  • Two years’ experience as a sonographer is (preferred).
  • Certification as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer by the RDMS and Oregon Board of Medical Imaging (OBMI) licensure in the state of Oregon (required).
  • RVT (preferred).

Physical Requirements

  • Standing 6-8 hours/day, walking, stretching, bending and sitting.
  • Ability to move equipment and transfer patients.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. or less.
  • Ability to move patients weighing over 100 lbs from wheelchair to exam bed.
