UI/UX Developer
About the role
We are a federal IT company on a mission to make customer experience (CX) the center of every government solution. Technology is our passion; people are our purpose. NuAxis is home to thinkers and feelers, engineers and artists who work hard and support each other — teamwork is a state of mind, and we believe happy employees do amazing work.
This full-time UI/UX Developer role leads human-centered design and front-end implementation for WHD’s modernized Drupal applications and public-facing portals serving workers, employers, contractors, unions, and federal agencies. The work spans user research, prototyping, and production code, delivering accessible, mobile-first, USWDS-compliant experiences that replace paper and form-heavy processes with guided digital journeys.
Responsibilities
- Conduct user research, stakeholder interviews, environmental scanning, and audience research; develop personas and user journey maps.
- Produce wireframes, interactive prototypes, style guides, and design system components compliant with USWDS and DOL.gov styles.
- Coordinate designs with the DOL Digital Transformation team and the BAS SORT team.
- Design guided, cascading-question experiences (e.g., Wage Determination Survey, complaint intake) with save-and-resume, document upload, and confirmation-number lookup.
- Implement responsive front-end code in Drupal 10+ themes (Twig, HTML5, CSS/Sass, JavaScript) and Webform UI; ensure touch-friendly, cross-browser behavior.
- Build accessibility in from the start: semantic markup, ARIA, keyboard operability, and screen reader compatibility (JAWS, NVDA) to WCAG AA / Section 508.
- Plan and run usability testing and A/B tests; use site analytics to optimize completion rates (e.g., survey starts versus submissions).
- Apply plain language principles and support bilingual (English/Spanish) content layouts.
- Design the conversational user experience for integrating the OCIO-built AI chatbot into the complaint intake portal.
- Ensure designs align with the 21st Century Integrated Digital Experience Act and Digital.gov best practices.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Design, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 5+ years of combined UI/UX design and front-end development experience, with a portfolio of shipped work.
- Hands-on experience applying the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS).
- Strong HTML, CSS/Sass, and JavaScript skills; experience theming Drupal or another enterprise CMS.
- Proficiency in Figma or a comparable design and prototyping tool.
- Demonstrated experience designing and building WCAG/Section 508-conformant interfaces.
- Experience planning and facilitating usability testing.
- U.S. person; must obtain and maintain a favorable NACI / HSPD-12 background investigation.
Preferred Qualifications

- Drupal 10+ and Twig theming; Acquia certification.
- DHS Trusted Tester or IAAP (CPACC/WAS) certification.
- Conversational or chatbot UX design experience.
- Spanish language proficiency.
