The Staff Nurse I is accountable for delivering patient care using the Nursing Process and Relationship-Based Care model. This role provides direct patient care, improves patient outcomes through Shared Leadership, Evidence-Based Practice, and standards of nursing excellence, and functions as an interdisciplinary team member to achieve quality patient care and unit/organizational goals.

Responsibilities

• Complete required orientation and unit-specific competencies.
• Develop, implement, and update patient care plans based on ongoing assessments and family input.
• Collaborate with healthcare team members to promote effective patient care.
• Verify and implement provider orders, documenting accurately in the electronic medical record.
• Engage patients and families to create appropriate educational plans.
• Recognize symptoms, establish priorities, and respond to changing patient needs.
• Delegate tasks to support personnel per the Illinois State Nurse Practice Act and provide feedback.
• Demonstrate commitment to UI Health’s values through teamwork and communication to ensure quality outcomes, patient safety, and a therapeutic environment.
• Advocate for patients, families, and the nursing profession.
• Integrate evidence-based research and clinical experience to provide quality patient care.
• Utilize hospital-approved acuity and scheduling tools for optimal staffing and assignments.
• Support Shared Leadership and participate in organizational and unit activities.
• Seek opportunities to enhance job skills and maintain required certifications (e.g., RN licensure, BLS).
• Assume the role of Charge Nurse when assigned, using appropriate resources.
• Provide and receive feedback on performance and practice.
• Adhere to UI Health’s Code of Conduct, treating all individuals with respect and dignity.
• Comply with time, attendance, and overtime policies.
• Complete assigned electronic learning modules and comply with TB, flu, and fit-testing requirements.
• Use established communication channels to escalate or resolve patient care issues.
• Identify recurring clinical or unit problems and participate in problem-solving.
• Collaborate with nurses to create positive learning experiences for staff and students.
• Serve as a preceptor or resource for nursing staff and students.
• Access UI Health’s intranet for policy updates and relevant communications.
• Support nursing and multidisciplinary research efforts.
• Take responsibility for continued professional growth by identifying and addressing learning needs.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in Illinois.
• Current AHA BLS/CPR and other required unit-specific certifications.
• Effective communication skills (oral and written) to facilitate therapeutic relationships.
• Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
• Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills, and work history.
• One year of ambulatory nursing experience and neurology experience required.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $36.08/hr to $80.98/hr. The final rate offered will be determined by the collective bargaining agreement, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, and budget constraints. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a rate at or near the top of the range.

Schedule

Full-time position with a work schedule of Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM.
