About the role

Responsibilities

  • Completes required orientation program, unit-specific competencies, and cross training across oncology disease group specialties.
  • Prepares for provider clinics by reviewing assigned provider schedules and patient assignments, assisting with patient rooming, handling patient concerns, responding to EPIC In Basket, responding to patient communications, and performing oncology care coordination.
  • Supports patient treatment and care plans, coordinating with Hematology/Oncology Infusion Center staff, and performing patient nurse visits.
  • Verifies and implements orders from physician, physician assistant, and/or advanced practice nurse by performing interventions as prescribed by the provider and documenting accurately in the electronic health record.
  • Shares information and collaborates with the healthcare team to promote effective patient care.
  • Recognizes and treats cancer-related issues.
  • Recognizes symptoms, establishes priorities, and responds to changing patient needs.
  • Teaches patients and families regarding treatment expectations.
  • Advocates for patients, families, significant others, the community, and the nursing profession.
  • Serves as Charge Nurse when assigned, utilizing appropriate resources and tools.
  • Collaborates with other nurses to identify, promote, and provide positive learning experiences for staff and students.
  • Serves as preceptor and/or resource to other nursing, support staff and students.
  • Demonstrates commitment to UI Health values through teamwork and effective communication.

Requirements

  • Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
  • One year prior Registered Nurse experience, required.
  • Current certification in Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Chemotherapy/Biotherapy or obtained prior to hire, required.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills that support therapeutic relationships with patients, families, and health care providers.
  • Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record with on-the-job training.
  • Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills, and work history required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing or higher from an accredited nursing program preferred.
  • Hematology, oncology, and/or ambulatory care experience preferred.
  • Outpatient ambulatory experience preferred.
  • Oncology experience preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively in groups and teams while exercising sound clinical judgment.
  • In-depth knowledge of outpatient oncology center nursing operations preferred.
