About the role

The Staff Nurse I provides direct patient care and takes the initiative to improve patient outcomes by integrating Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care, and standards of nursing excellence into clinical practice. This position integrates the professional practice model, current standards of practice, and clinical experience to deliver “quality” patient care as measured by established nursing quality standards and other governing/accrediting health care bodies.

The Staff Nurse I engages and obtains information from patients and/or families to advocate for the patient, develops an appropriate patient educational plan, and responds to the patient’s changing needs while sharing information and collaborating with other members of the health care team to promote effective patient care. The Staff Nurse I participates in organizational, departmental, and shared leadership activities; supports department and unit goals in daily behavior.

Responsibilities

• Develops, implements, and updates the patient’s plan of care based on on-going assessment of the patient and input from the patient’s family.
• Shares information and collaborates with other members of the health care team to promote effective patient care.
• Verifies and implements orders from physicians, physician assistants, and/or advanced practice nurses by performing interventions as prescribed and documenting accurately in the electronic medical record.
• Engages and obtains information from patients and/or families to develop an appropriate patient educational plan.
• Recognizes symptoms, establishes priorities, and responds to the patient’s changing needs.
• Engages support personnel by delegating appropriate tasks per the Illinois State Nurse Practice Act and provides support and feedback.
• Advocates for patients, families, and their significant others, the community, and the nursing profession.
• Integrates theoretical knowledge, evidence-based research, current standards of practice, and clinical experience to provide “quality” patient care.
• Assumes the role of Charge Nurse when assigned, utilizing appropriate resources and tools.
• Collaborates with other nurses to identify, promote, and provide positive learning experiences for staff and students.
• Serves as preceptor and/or resource to other nursing staff, support staff, and students.
• Takes responsibility for continued professional growth and development by identifying learning needs and initiating strategies to meet them.
• Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned.

Requirements

• Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation. Compact and out-of-state RN licenses are not accepted.
• Graduated from a Registered Nurse Program.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) and/or other required unit-specific certifications.
• Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) issued by the American Heart Association (AHA), or within 6 months of hire for the main hospital.
• Two years of recent Med/Surg experience.
• Effective oral and written communication skills that facilitate therapeutic relationships with patients, families, and healthcare providers.
• Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
• Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills, and work history.

New graduate nurses must have completed their RN program and have passed the NCLEX exam to meet the licensure requirement for this role.

This position requires Illinois residency within 180 days of the hire date.

Pay

The previously determined range for this position is $37.52/hr. to $84.22/hr. The final rate offered will be determined by the collective bargaining agreement, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, and budget constraints. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a rate at or near the top of the full range.
