Mulago Hospital, located in Kampala, Uganda, is an affiliated hospital with the Yale School of Medicine. This program places Yale attendings and residents at Mulago Hospital throughout the year, fostering a bilateral exchange with Ugandan students and faculty.
Eligible students are funded through grants from the Office of Global Health Education and will observe on several inpatient clinical services at the hospital. Due to the hospital's resource limitations, routine tests and procedures that are common at Yale may not be available here. The Ugandan physicians rely heavily on history and physical examination skills to diagnose and monitor patients.
Physical exam rounds by expert clinicians will enhance Yale students' physical exam skills. Students will gain insight into the impact of the HIV epidemic on the Ugandan population, observing patients with advanced illnesses. They will also learn about the local language, history, and culture through faculty lectures and interactions with students.
Participants will spend 6 weeks rotating at Mulago Hospital. Weekend trips to explore other parts of Uganda are encouraged. The program is currently inactive due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
