UAS Research Operations Administrator

We are seeking a UAS Research Operations Administrator to guide, develop, support, and lead unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and ground (BackPack) mission planning, data collection, processing, and experimental design for multiple Institute projects.

Responsibilities

• Train undergraduate, graduate, and temporary staff assistants in UAS technology
• Ensure all Institute UAS operations comply with FAA Part 107 Commercial UAS and NDAA regulations
• Administer the data catalog for the primary Institute data repository
• Test, utilize, and oversee automated data processing pipelines
• Review, analyze, and interpret collected UAS and ground-based data
• Manage dissemination of raw and processed data to research and stakeholder groups
• Document results for presentations and reporting to internal and external audiences
• Create detailed documentation of training content and workflows, including aircraft checklists, UAS mission planning, sensor operation, and data processing
• Oversee high-level and day-to-day operations of Institute data collection missions
• Report on existing and upcoming data collection plans
• Coordinate and plan data collection and experimental design with Institute faculty and researchers
• Plan personnel travel and equipment transportation for data collection missions
• Operate and maintain an equipment management website for check-in, check-out, and utilization of Institute equipment
• Operate, clean, and maintain research equipment and research areas
• Track inventory levels and place replenishment or replacement orders as needed
• Monitor the lab for missing or broken equipment and report issues (hardware, software, and facilities) promptly
• Contribute technical and operational expertise to sponsored program proposals involving UAS or ground missions
• Provide technical and mission expertise for sponsored program reports to funding agencies
• Assist or lead the development and implementation of technical workshops for Institute, Purdue personnel, and external stakeholders
• Represent the Institute at professional and public stakeholder conferences and meetings
• Advise prospective UAS users on all aspects of UAS operations and missions
• Offer guest lectures on UAS and Digital Forestry to relevant undergraduate and graduate courses
• Assist with teaching the FNR Summer practicum

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, ecology, geography, or a related field
• 2 years of operational experience with UAS, including related hardware and software
• In lieu of a degree, an equivalent combination of education and experience (Associate’s degree + 4 years of experience) may be considered
• Proof of an up-to-date 14 CFR Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate
• Ability to work independently and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner
• Strong problem-solving skills to address equipment-related issues
• Strong communication abilities to work with undergraduate assistant pilots and affiliated faculty
• Ability to work in a team with strong time management and willingness to learn new skills
• Excellent writing, verbal communication, organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills

Schedule

This position works between the hours of 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Occasional flights may be required outside of these hours, including weekends.
