The Tool & Die Maker role involves setting up and operating computer-controlled and mechanically controlled machine tools to produce precision metal parts, instruments, and tools.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, band saws, surface grinders, vertical grinders, radial drill presses, bench grinders, and various hand power tools for machining, assembling, and repairing metal parts, progressive dies, injection molds, tools, and equipment.
• Receive instructions from the Supervisor on work assignments.
• Select proper tool steel for given tools and machines.
• Heat treat and grind to finished blueprint or old part specifications.
• Grind and fit carbide die components while working with critical tolerances.
• Check progressive dies and injection molds to determine repairs needed to ensure product meets required specifications.
• Interpret blueprints, layouts, sketches, and other complicated drawings as required.
• Use knowledge and experience to build dies or molds from working stock to produce various parts.
• Inspect and measure all finished material for required specifications.
• Maintain clean, safe, and orderly work areas at all times.
• Perform other related miscellaneous duties as required.

Qualifications

• Ability to follow instructions.
• Ability to operate Drill Press, Mill, Grinder, and Lathe with set-up assistance.
• Ability to read calipers, micrometers, and indicators.
• Willingness to train new Tool and Die Makers.
• Ability to read and understand shop prints.
• Ability to complete tasks with minimal assistance.
• Ability to make jigs and fixtures.
• Understanding of uses and best application for each tool steel.
• Ability to complete heat treat process.
• Ability to grind tooling to tight tolerances.
• Understanding and use of shop math.
• Ability to sharpen and maintain tooling for dies.
• Ability to construct tooling for dies.
• Ability to complete set-up of Mill, Lathe, and Grinder independently.
