About the role

As a Professional Tutor in UVU’s Writing Center, you will play a meaningful role in helping writers at every stage of their academic journey strengthen their communication skills and achieve their goals. Working with undergraduate and graduate students, as well as graduate school applicants, you will provide individualized and small-group support through in-person and online tutoring sessions. This position offers the opportunity to make a direct impact on student success while developing valuable skills in teaching, coaching, communication, and collaboration.

Beyond tutoring, you will contribute to a campus-wide culture of writing through workshops, events, educational resources, and other Writing Center initiatives. Tutors may also have opportunities to mentor peers and take on leadership responsibilities while receiving comprehensive training and certification. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about helping others learn, enjoy working in a supportive team environment, and want to gain professional experience that is highly transferable to careers in education, communication, business, and many other fields.

Responsibilities

  • Tutor writers in one-on-one or group tutorials, either live, face-to-face sessions or online asynchronous/synchronous sessions.
  • Work on specialized projects, workshops, handouts, mentoring, etc.
  • Attend training and work on certification/training materials.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with courses offered by the corresponding department.
  • Ability to attend weekly staff education meetings on Mondays from 4:00 PM to 4:50 PM.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience providing writing support or tutoring in academic, professional, or community settings.
  • Current or completed CRLA (College Reading and Learning Association) tutor certification.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Graduate-level coursework or progress toward an advanced degree.

Skills & Knowledge

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of writing, tutoring, and learning processes and strategies.
  • Knowledge and strong foundation of academic writing, including disciplinary writing and writing at the graduate and professional levels.
  • Familiarity with campus resources.

Skills

  • Interpersonal communication, problem-solving, and decision-making.
  • Computer applications.

Abilities

  • Ability to collaborate with students, faculty/staff, and/or community patrons to enhance their knowledge of tutored subject.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to read, write, and be understood in the English language.
  • Ability to motivate students.
  • Ability to build positive working relationships with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to accept and complete assigned projects.
