Tutor - Speech - Part-time

Malcolm X College is seeking a Part-Time Speech Tutor for the Academic Support Department. The mission of Malcolm X College is to provide accessible liberal arts and health-focused education that fosters personal and professional achievement.

About the Role

A Tutor provides students with tutoring and instructional support in an academic or occupational area of study to help improve their academic capabilities and progress academically, while promoting independent learning and self-reliance. Tutors assist tutees in developing and improving their competency in course work and help students integrate and apply effective study skills, active reading and note-taking, test-taking strategies, and time management and organizational skills.

Tutors work with students in various programs across the colleges, providing individual and small group tutoring in math, reading, writing, English, and other subject areas. Tutors also work inside the classroom as embedded tutors, tutor students in math and writing labs, and provide online tutoring services to students enrolled in distance learning courses.

Responsibilities

• Provides academic assistance and tutoring to students on an individual or group basis on a wide range of subjects in an academic or occupational area.
• Helps students gain a deeper comprehension of course materials and a better understanding of work assignments to improve their academic success.
• Crafts effective tutoring plans to address tutee’s weaknesses and strengths; motivates students and provides them with confidence to feel successful.
• Provides students with learning strategies including ways to improve study skills and retention, how to organize work, effective use of time, and how to build better study habits.
• Schedules individual tutoring sessions at a college’s Tutoring/Learning Resource/Academic Support Center, based on students' requests for tutoring in a specific subject area, course, or discipline.
• Assists the tutee in problem solving and applying critical thinking techniques in the context of a specific discipline or subject area.
• Helps students develop positive attitudes and a high level of motivation towards learning and studying, build self-confidence, and reduce anxiety or fear of failure in academic work.
• Prepares students for standardized testing and provides strategies to overcome test anxiety.
• Participates in tutor orientation and attends professional development and training sessions to increase competency in subject areas and improve tutoring skills.
• May conduct academic skill reviews and lead workshops on academic skills.
• Provides ongoing communication with students, instructors, and academic advisors regarding academic progress of individual students.
• Maintains records on tutoring activities and provides periodic student assessments and evaluations as required.

Embedded Tutor Responsibilities

• Supports the classroom instructor as an embedded tutor, proactively engaging students in learning exercises, monitoring students’ level of comprehension, and assisting students struggling with materials and course content.
• Meets with instructors to discuss implementation and use of lesson plans, review feedback on learning activities, and assess students’ progress and challenges in the classroom.
• Conducts in-class presentations on various strategies to improve academic capabilities including study and note-taking skills, reading comprehension skills, and writing skills.

Reading and Writing Lab / Math Lab Responsibilities

• Coaches students through the writing process as it relates to various academic disciplines, helping students become better academic writers, develop critical thinking skills, and understand academic research and documentation of sources.
• Works with students to help them become adept with writing techniques used to plan, draft, revise, and edit written documents.
• Tutors students enrolled in an integrated reading/writing course at the developmental/foundational level to increase their academic proficiency to college level.
• Leads activities and works with students in developmental and ESL reading courses, such as practicing clear thoughts at the sentence and paragraph level, and longer-form writing.
• Assesses assigned students' level of writing skills and attitude towards writing and sets goals for tutoring sessions at the writing center.
• Tutors students to improve their math competency and build confidence, applying learning strategies to work with students with different learning styles and abilities in math.
• Provides tutoring for various levels of math including developmental, transitional, high school mathematics (pre-algebra, geometry), college algebra, and statistics.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university in a field of study related to the subject(s) being tutored, or similar technical certifications and training.
• Specific additional requirements or certifications may be required depending on the assignment area.
• Completion of tutoring certification preferred.
• Experience in teaching, tutoring, or delivering academic support to students at the postsecondary instructional level is strongly preferred.
• Experience working in a large, urban community college environment with a diverse cultural and ethnic student body is highly desirable.

Pay

Salary Range: $16.97/hr. - $23.87/hr.
