About the role
Truman College’s Science Center is seeking a part-time Tutor for General Biology. The Science Center is a study space designed to help students thrive academically in biology, chemistry, physics, and other sciences. Tutors assist students in developing and improving their competency in coursework, integrating and applying effective study skills, note-taking, test-taking strategies, and time management. Tutors work with students across various programs, providing individual and small-group tutoring, as well as embedded classroom support.
Responsibilities
- Provide academic assistance and tutoring to students individually and in small groups.
- Help students gain a deeper comprehension of course materials and improve their understanding of assignments to enhance academic success.
- Develop effective tutoring plans addressing students' strengths and weaknesses, motivating them and building their confidence.
- Teach learning strategies, including study skills, retention techniques, work organization, time management, and study habits.
- Create instructional materials and workshops for students and staff.
- Plan and deliver workshops on academic support topics.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university in Biology or a related field.
- Ability to tutor General Biology; experience with Anatomy and Physiology and Microbiology is highly preferred.
- Saturday and early evening availability is highly preferred.
- Completion of tutoring certification is preferred.
- Experience in teaching, tutoring, or delivering academic support at the post-secondary level is strongly preferred.
- Experience working in a large, urban community college with a diverse student body is highly desirable.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Pay
Salary range: $17.48–$24.59 per hour.
