Tutor
About the role
At The New York Foundling, we trust in the power and potential of people, and we deliberately invest in proven practices. From bold beginnings in 1869, our New York‑based nonprofit has supported hundreds of thousands of our neighbors on their own paths to stability, strength, and independence. We help children and families navigate through and beyond foster care, assist families struggling with conflict and poverty, support individuals with developmental disabilities, and provide access to quality health and mental‑health services. The tutoring position is designed to help students in the foster‑care system by providing academic mentorship, support, and advocacy for resources and programs not otherwise offered.
Responsibilities
- Host individual tutoring sessions and submit timely, detailed documentation to ensure youth receive at least two sessions per month and meet academic goals.
- Communicate regularly with students, caregivers, stakeholders, and staff to ensure consistent attendance, agreement on service plans, and comprehensive service delivery.
- Prepare for tutoring sessions by creating individualized, culturally competent, and academically rigorous plans; review content, IEPs, and additional supports to address holistic student needs.
- Attend professional development activities, including individual and group coaching, departmental meetings, case reviews, and trainings from HR, ACS, and partner organizations to enhance tutoring techniques.
- Advocate for and support tracking of academic progress, including advising on high‑school and college applications and sustaining academic achievement to help youth reach their highest potential.
The New York Foundling is committed to attracting and retaining a diverse employee population. The organization honors each employee’s experiences, perspectives, and unique identity, striving to create inclusive, equitable, and welcoming working and learning environments.
