Position Summary
Turf and Irrigation Specialist
Recreation Services Department
Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent and 4 years full-time irrigation repair and maintenance, agronomy, horticulture, sports turf management, and water conservation practices.
- Any equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Must be able to learn and operate a variety of small and large equipment, and possess (or obtain within 6 months of hire) a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License and within one year an Arizona State Applicators license (Turf and Ornamental & Right of Way Categories).
- Backflow Certification preferred.
Essential Duties
- Perform soil moisture content testing;
- Perform or assist in scheduled preventative maintenance and emergency repair of irrigation systems such as water line breaks and broken irrigation heads;
- Troubleshoot central controller and field controller;
- Establish, perform, and monitor schedules for mowing, aerifying, top dressing, turf seeding, fertilizing and the application of pre-emergent, post emergent, herbicide, and insecticide;
- Install new irrigation systems as needed;
- Assist other staff in Division (i.e. parks, lakes, trails, landscaping, open space, and special events) as needed;
- Assist with plumbing projects including winterizing and recharging drinking fountains and drip systems;
- May be placed "on-call at times."
Mandatory Overtime
- Nights, weekends, and special events may be required.
Other Duties as Assigned
May be required to assist with other tasks as directed.
Knowledge, Skill and Abilities
- Basic electricity, hydraulics, computers and record keeping;
- Irrigation system installation, repair, and maintenance;
- Rain Master Oasis Irrigation System or equivalent knowledgeable Operation;
- Operation of a variety of heavy and light equipment and vehicles;
- Grounds keeping and landscaping maintenance practices and procedures;
- Supervisory methods and techniques;
- Hazard and Safety precautions associated with park irrigation maintenance;
- OSHA safety standards and practices;
- Installing, maintaining, and repairing Rain Master Oasis Irrigation System or equivalent;
- Utilizing public relations techniques in responding to inquiries and complaints;
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with State, federal, and other local officials, elected officials, subordinate staff, and City residents;
- Working cooperatively with City employees and the public;
- Producing written documents with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation and grammar;
- Learning job related material through oral instruction, observation, reading, or classroom setting;
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others;
- Sufficient to effectively perform required duties and to safely operate required equipment and city vehicles as needed;
- Sufficient to clearly, concisely and effectively communicate in person, over the radio and by telephone.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions

- Must possess ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time, perform repetitive lifting, stooping, bending, and twisting and capable of lifting 50 pounds frequently.
- Job hazards present may include adverse weather conditions, confined space, high traffic areas, exposure to raw sewage, chemicals, rotating equipment, noise, high-medium-low voltage, and other potentially hazardous environments.
