About the role
This postdoctoral position is part of an innovative project to model and control turbulence for magnetically confined fusion and ocean transport, conducted by an interdisciplinary team of turbulence scientists, ocean modelers, and plasma physicists at Los Alamos National Laboratory in collaboration with the University of Michigan. The position may be based in Ann Arbor, MI, or Los Alamos, NM, with up to three openings.
Responsibilities
- Be a part of our innovative new project to model and control turbulence focusing on two critical applications: magnetically confined fusion and transport in the ocean.
- Work with an interdisciplinary team of turbulence scientists, ocean modelers, and plasma physicists to develop a new paradigm of coherent structure‑based turbulence modeling.
- Help create fast, accurate, low‑order models that provide robust predictions of ocean currents and enable control of fusion systems.
- Develop cross‑domain skills by working in fluid turbulence, plasma physics, or ocean flow modeling.
- Collaborate with Los Alamos National Laboratory staff from the X Computational Physics and Theoretical divisions and with faculty at the University of Michigan.
- Work onsite in either Ann Arbor, MI, or Los Alamos, NM.
Requirements
- Domain expertise: research experience in at least one of the following:
- Theory, simulation, or modeling of fluid turbulence
- Magnetohydrodynamics or plasma physics
- Modeling and simulation of ocean flows
- Computational Fluid Dynamics
- Education/Experience: Ph.D. in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or a related field, specializing in fluid dynamics, plasma physics, or oceans, completed within the last five years or soon to be completed.
- Clearance: Ability to obtain a Q clearance (typically requires U.S. citizenship).
- Communication and Collaboration: Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to educate LANL staff about research and work collaboratively on LANL‑relevant problems.
- Continuous Learning: Demonstrated initiative for learning new tools and applying them to novel challenges.
