About the role
The Captain is the onboard person ultimately responsible and accountable for the safety of the crew and passengers, the care of the cargo, equipment, and supplies being transferred, as well as the proper care of the Tugboat and its equipment. The Captain ensures the safe and efficient navigation, handling, and maneuvering of the Tugboat in various waterways and is responsible for the safe transportation of contract companies' personnel, cargo, supplies, and equipment. The Captain also serves as the Company's on-site representative, ensuring compliance with Company, Coast Guard, and environmental regulations.
Responsibilities
- Ensure the vessel is seaworthy at all times, including fuel, water, spare parts, safety apparatus, provisions, and stores.
- Maintain all engines and machinery, perform regular checks, and ensure timely vessel cleaning, maintenance, and housekeeping.
- Stay current with U.S. and local laws, port requirements, vessel handling characteristics, and navigational equipment operation.
- Safely operate and navigate the vessel, including loading/unloading, secure storage of supplies, and managing crew and passenger conduct.
- Ensure proper training and qualifications of supervised employees, verifying competence and licensing where applicable.
- Supervise navigational work and watches to ensure accurate and safe vessel maneuvering.
- Monitor weather conditions and respond appropriately to ensure personnel safety, vessel security, and successful job completion.
Requirements
- USCG Master of Towing License for operating towing vessels in inland waters (near coastal endorsements is a plus).
- CPR, First Aid, and Firefighting certifications.
- FCC Radio/Telephone Operating Permit.
