About the role

The City of Tucson is seeking a skilled Heavy Truck Mechanic to perform complex repairs and maintenance on a variety of heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, including diesel trucks, fire apparatus, and construction equipment. This position ensures the safe and efficient operation of the city’s fleet, supporting essential public services.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy-duty trucks, fire apparatus, and construction equipment, including engines, transmissions, brakes, hydraulics, electrical systems, and emissions components.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and servicing according to manufacturer specifications and city standards.
  • Troubleshoot complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues using diagnostic tools and technical manuals.
  • Weld, fabricate, and modify parts as needed for repairs or custom applications.
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, parts usage, and labor hours in the fleet management system.
  • Operate and test repaired vehicles and equipment to ensure proper functionality and compliance with safety standards.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work environment, including proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Provide guidance and training to apprentices or less experienced mechanics as needed.
  • Respond to emergency repair requests and roadside assistance calls for disabled city vehicles.
  • Collaborate with fleet management, parts suppliers, and other departments to ensure timely and cost-effective repairs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Completion of a vocational or technical program in diesel mechanics, heavy equipment repair, or a related field (or equivalent military training).
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience as a heavy-duty truck or diesel mechanic, with a strong background in diagnosing and repairing complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) in medium/heavy-duty truck repair (e.g., T-series) is highly desirable.
  • Valid Arizona driver’s license with a clean driving record; a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire is required.
  • Proficiency in using diagnostic software, scan tools, and precision measurement instruments.
  • Experience with welding, fabrication, and machining is a plus.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 75 pounds, work in confined spaces, and perform tasks in various weather conditions.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication skills and a commitment to providing high-quality customer service.

Schedule
