About the role

The Juneau Youth Probation is recruiting to fill a Juvenile Probation Officer 1/2 position located at the Johnson Youth Center. This position is open to Alaska residents only.

Responsibilities

• Working to positively influence, motivate, and steer young offenders toward community restoration and developing competencies to lead a productive and crime-free life.
• Aiding in the transition of youth back into the community after completing a B1 institution order, as well as managing community cases.
• Collaborating with detention and treatment facility staff, as well as other community agencies for care and collaboration.
• Setting high expectations for both self and youth, and being prepared to arrest, restrain, and transport a youth as needed, or travel to itinerant communities for JPO duties.
• Drafting court documents, performing data entry, presenting in court, supervising youth, conducting site audits, participating in mandatory training, and being on-call.
• Providing supervision and accountability-based services aimed at promoting notable, long-term, positive benefits to families, youth, and communities served.

Requirements

• Training in juvenile justice, criminal justice, criminology, sociology, social work, psychology, guidance and counseling, the behavioral sciences, or a closely related field.
• Experience providing juvenile justice probation, adult probation, adult protection services, child protection services, or supervision of juvenile offenders in a juvenile justice facility.
• Written Communication: Writes in a clear, concise, organized, and convincing manner for the intended audience.
• Self-Management: Sets well-defined and realistic personal goals; displays a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment towards completing assignments in a timely manner; works with minimal supervision; is motivated to achieve; demonstrates responsible behavior.
• Stress Management: Deals calmly and effectively with high stress situations (for example, tight deadlines, hostile individuals, emergency, or dangerous situations).

Qualifications

• Juvenile Probation Officer 1: Requires a combination of education and/or experience that provides competencies in Psychology, Integrity/Honesty, and Interpersonal Skills.
• Juvenile Probation Officer 2: Requires a combination of education and/or experience that provides competencies in Psychology, Decision Making, and Interpersonal Skills.

SkillsKnowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of human behavior and performance in various contexts, mental processes, or the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.

Ability to write in a clear, concise, organized, and convincing manner.

Ability to set well-defined and realistic personal goals.

Ability to deal calmly and effectively with high stress situations.

Pay

Starting salary will be determined by the level of the position. If filled at Level 1, promotion to the Level 2 will only occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class and final approval by supervisor.

Schedule

The position is centrally located in Juneau at the Johnson Youth Center, with occasional travel to other communities, working a variety of hours, and sharing on-call responsibilities with other staff. In addition to Juneau, supervision of probationers occurs in Gustavus, Haines, Hoonah, Skagway, and Yakutat.
