Trustee (Finance)

About the role

The Board Member Northumbria Historic Churches Trust (NHCT) is seeking a Trustee with a strong accounting background to join its Board. Following a recent and generous legacy, the Trust is entering a period of growth, with increased capacity to award grants for the repair and restoration of churches across the North East. They are looking to strengthen their Board with additional financial expertise to support robust financial management and governance.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to the strategic direction and governance of the Trust, ensuring financial processes, controls, and reporting are appropriate, transparent, and effective.
• Oversee the financial health, integrity, and sustainability of the Trust.
• Support strong financial controls, compliance, and risk management.
• Review financial reporting, budgets, and annual accounts.
• Contribute to sound decision-making on grant allocation.
• Work closely with the Treasurer to support financial oversight and governance.

Requirements

• Experience in accounting, audit, or financial reporting.
• Experience in financial controls, risk management, and compliance.
• Experience in governance within a charity or similar organisation (desirable but not essential).
• Experience of working with auditors, independent examiners, or in a regulated environment would be particularly valuable.

Skills

• Sound judgement and attention to detail.
• The confidence to provide constructive challenge and scrutiny.
• The ability to interpret financial information clearly for a non-financial audience.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to contribute effectively in a group setting.
