The Vehicle Driver II position performs highly complex (senior-level) motor vehicle operations under the supervision of the Regional Laundry Director. The Regional Laundries deliver, pick-up, and process linens for both State Hospitals and State Supported Living Centers.

Work involves operating a heavy-duty tractor-trailer and/or a medium-duty truck to transport cargo between state-owned facilities. The Vehicle Driver follows a predetermined schedule to deliver and pick up cargo from facilities in the state, both on and off campus. This position ensures cargo is handled in accordance with facility rules and regulations, maintains vehicle cleanliness, and operates motorized vehicles safely in compliance with state traffic laws.

Responsibilities

  • Attends work regularly and may be asked to work specific shifts, rotating schedules, extended shifts, or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy.
  • Safely operates over-the-road tractor-trailers and other state vehicles in accordance with agency, facility, and Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) rules and regulations.
  • Possesses and maintains a commercial driver license (Class A CDL) and medical card to operate an over-the-road tractor-trailer.
  • Carries a facility cell phone at all times during on/off-campus trips.
  • Acquires the Regional Laundry Director or Laundry Manager’s signature for the load before leaving the home facility; notifies the receiving facility upon departure; and calls the home facility before leaving the pick-up site with the cart count.
  • Meets with the Regional Laundry Director daily to develop a plan of action and coordinates with other drivers.
  • Delivers and picks up linens to/from the folding/worker program, ensuring proper documentation through Folding Logs and Inventory Logs.
  • Performs operator vehicle and trailer preventative maintenance checks before, during, and after operations, reporting any issues immediately.
  • Completes and files required forms, including Driver’s Vehicle Inspection Reports, Miles Logs, Clean & Dirty Shipping Logs, Disinfecting of Laundry Trucks forms, and Fuel Logs.
  • Delivers cargo safely and on time, ensuring proper loading, securing, and unloading of laundry carts to prevent damage.
  • Maintains cargo integrity and safety, ensuring vehicle capacity is not exceeded and cargo is distributed to reduce maximum axle loading.
  • Receives and maintains certification for using lifts, pallet jacks, and other loading/unloading equipment safely.
  • Conducts vehicle operation and safety training for new laundry staff, including safe operation of medium-duty trucks, lift gates, and accurate recording of load sheets.
  • Assists in maintaining current new linen inventory records and reports.
  • Serves as a backup for tasks assigned to Laundry Worker I’s, II’s, and III’s, and may supervise their work when directed by the Regional Laundry Director.
  • Maintains delivery vehicles at optimal condition by cleaning and sanitizing trailers after unloading soiled laundry carts, disinfecting trailer interiors, and performing regular exterior cleaning.
  • Actively participates in disaster response, recovery, or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation as required, which may include alternate shift patterns or locations.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of safe motor vehicle operations and preventative maintenance.
  • Knowledge of safe cargo loading/unloading, storage, and securing methods.
  • Knowledge of operations/instruction manuals and safety materials.
  • Knowledge of all Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) driving rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of infection control policies.
  • Skill in operating tractor-trailer combinations and medium-duty vehicles safely.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Good physical stamina, hand-eye coordination, and reflexes.
  • Ability to use lift gates, pallet jacks, forklifts, or other loading/unloading equipment, with appropriate certification.
  • Ability to use proper lifting techniques and lift/carry 40-50 pounds.
  • Ability to throw 20 pounds a distance of 6 feet.

Pay

Salary Range: $3,285.00 - $4,594.50 per month

Schedule

  • Full-time, regular position.
  • Day shift.
  • Travel: Up to 70%.
  • Not eligible for telework.
