Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO)

Tribal Historic Preservation Officer position focused on preserving, protecting, and managing ancestors, sacred objects, archaeological sites, properties, traditional cultural places, and archives significant to the Omaha Tribe.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the historic preservation plan for properties of traditional and cultural significance to the Omaha People within its ancestral and historic lands.
  • Maintain inventories of historic properties, including requesting maps and site information on known Omaha sites from History Nebraska.
  • Cooperate, advise, and assist Federal, State, Tribal, and local governments, as well as private organizations and individuals, on historic preservation issues per the approved Omaha Tribe Preservation Program.
  • Review, respond to, and monitor THPO Section 106 consultations, including the review of reported Native American human remains, burial sites, funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony.
  • Cooperate with the Secretary of the Interior, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, and other Federal and State agencies to ensure historic properties are considered in planning and development.
  • Maintain all grant funding and development for the THPO.
  • Apply for related grants to maintain and enhance the THPO program.
  • Communicate with Tribal, Federal, and State entities for consultation as needed.
  • Promote the THPO program and the Omaha Tribe within the state by monitoring historic sites in the Omaha Tribal region.
  • Provide public information on Historic Preservation and the functions of the THPO.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA) from a four-year college or university; or a minimum of 5 years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License and be insurable under tribal insurance.
  • Must pass a background check and pre-employment drug screen.

P.L. 93-638, Indian Preference and Tribal Employment Rights Ordinance (TERO) will be practiced, though all qualified applicants will be considered.
