True North Youth Foundation’s Camp Manitou is a summer camp and year-round recreation facility on 28 acres of land along the Assiniboine River in Headingley, Manitoba. The camp features outdoor programming, providing accessible, meaningful camp experiences to Manitoba children, youth, and community groups.
In 2017, 1x1 architecture completed a shower change building and Zamboni storage building to support the camp’s overnight cabins and the Foundation’s hockey academy programs. In 2018, 1x1 architecture was commissioned to design a new ±10,000 sq.ft. multi-use facility to replace the existing lodge. The new lodge building includes:
- A 200-person dining hall
- A commercial kitchen
- Administrative offices
- Dormitory rooms
- Ancillary spaces
The building also supports several outdoor functions with fully accessible washrooms, change rooms, and lockers for the outdoor pool area, as well as a large covered deck that opens up to the playing field and fire pit.
The building’s form is simple: two adjacent gabled volumes formed by using standard trusses that are offset in plan to create views and outdoor spaces. The majority of the building’s exterior walls and roofs are metal-clad to match the other buildings on site. The entrance intersects the building with a pronounced pitched roof that is pulled back on one side to create a welcoming and cabin-like entrance. Cedar siding provides natural warmth while highlighting entrances and exterior gathering areas, such as the building’s primary entrance where the cedar extends seamlessly between exterior and interior, and the vaulted ceiling of the dining hall with its cedar-clad scissor trusses and integrated lighting.
Additional interior materials and finishes are simple, durable, and timeless to stand up to the rigors of a well-used facility.
