Traveling Superintendent

Responsibilities

  • Oversight of all daily construction activities on-site for ground-up and tenant build-out projects, including site work and civil coordination.
  • Closely partner with the Project Manager to drive overall project progress, ensuring alignment with schedule, budget, and quality expectations.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate subcontractors, equipment deliveries, materials, utilities, and inspections to keep projects on track.
  • Work with subcontractors to complete projects within the established budget and time frame, proactively addressing issues and constraints.
  • Create and maintain detailed two-week look-ahead schedules and ensure all trades, materials, and inspections are properly sequenced.
  • Absess the work quality and progress of subcontractors and other field personnel, providing direction and corrections as needed.
  • Prepare thorough daily field log reports using FieldLens on a Microsoft Surface Pro, documenting progress, issues, and resolutions.
  • Maintain a safe jobsite in accordance with OSHA standards, actively identifying and mitigating hazards and reinforcing safety practices.
  • Coordinate and schedule all required inspections and utility connections to support timely project completion.
  • Represent the general contractor professionally in all client-facing interactions with owners, tenants, inspectors, and other stakeholders.
  • Assist with finish work as needed, including carpentry-related tasks such as door hanging, caulking, décor installation, and trim installation.
  • Leverage experience and sound judgment to plan work, solve problems, and make timely decisions that support project goals.
  • Adapt to fast-paced project cycles, typically 60–90 days, and manage multiple moving parts across several short-duration projects annually.
  • Work some Saturdays when necessary to maintain or recover schedule, particularly when crews are on-site to support project timelines.

Essential Skills

  • Ground-up construction experience on at least three projects, including site work and civil coordination.
  • Experience in quick-service restaurant, retail, or commercial construction, including tenant build-out projects.
  • Ability and willingness to travel regionally for projects, with a home base ideally in or near Indiana, Illinois, or Missouri.
  • Comfort working on fast-paced projects with typical durations of approximately 60–90 days (around 3–4 months).
  • Strong scheduling and planning discipline, including the ability to produce detailed two-week look-ahead schedules.
  • Demonstrated construction leadership background with either 2+ years as a Superintendent (preferred) or 3–4+ years as a Foreman/lead in a trade with full project lifecycle exposure and the ability to run site operations.
  • Proven ability to coordinate subcontractors, materials, utilities, and inspections to meet schedule and budget requirements.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and construction documents.
  • Experience managing subcontractors and overseeing their work for quality, safety, and adherence to plans and specifications.
  • Client-facing communication skills with the ability to represent the general contractor professionally to owners, clients, and inspectors.
  • Technology competence, including the ability to perform field reporting on a tablet (Microsoft Surface Pro), use email, and operate basic software tools.
  • Experience with FieldLens for all daily reporting and documentation.
  • Physical ability to move around the jobsite extensively, including walking and active oversight of field operations.
  • Willingness to work some Saturdays as needed to maintain project schedules.
  • Ability to successfully complete a background check, social media screen, and drug screen as part of the hiring process.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • OSHA 30 certification.
  • Carpentry background, particularly in finish work such as doors, trim, and décor installation.
  • Experience transitioning between multiple short-duration projects within a year.
  • Experience with Procore or similar construction management software.
  • Prior experience in quick-service restaurant construction, retail construction, or broader commercial construction environments.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound decisions in the field.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for coordinating with project teams, subcontractors, and stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in documentation, scheduling, and reporting.

Work Environment

  • This is a field-based role with work performed on active construction sites five days per week, with additional Saturday work as needed when crews are on-site to maintain schedule.
  • Projects are primarily regional, with most work occurring in and around Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri, and typical project durations of approximately 60–90 days.
  • The Superintendent travels to project locations and may return home on weekends as the project and location allow.
  • The role requires significant on-site mobility and active oversight of construction activities rather than working from a trailer.
  • You will use a Microsoft Surface Pro and FieldLens for daily reporting and communication, and a company-provided cellphone will support coordination and field operations.
  • The work environment includes typical commercial construction site conditions, including exposure to outdoor weather, active trades, and varying site conditions.
  • Safety is a core focus, and all work must comply with OSHA standards.
  • Travel support includes mileage reimbursement from mobilization to demobilization, a per diem for daily expenses, and company-covered lodging such as hotels or short-term rentals, with reimbursement available for personal lodging solutions such as an RV or camper.
