- Unit staffing description:
- Dayshift: unit secretary and 2-3 PCTs depending on census
- Nightshift: 2-3 PCTs depending on census
- Type of equipment: Welch Allyn dynamaps, Phillips telemetry, Phillips MP2, Pyxis, Alaris pumps, Hill-Rom beds, iMobile devices, MobiLab
- Documentation system: Meditech
- Scheduling requirements:
- 3 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule
- Self-scheduling (within reason to allow balanced staffing)
- May request days off as needed prior to schedule closing
- Schedule finalized 2 weeks in advance
- Can accommodate block scheduling for night shift
- Floating policy: Travel RNs float first; rotation based on oldest float date
- Patient Experience requirements:
- Heavy cardiac patient population
- CV surgery patients transferred from ICU to PCU
- Q6H head-to-toe assessments with full charting
Patient Population and Procedures
The PCU delivers highly individualized care to medical, cardiac, and surgical complex patients requiring intermediate care, including:
- Sepsis, stroke, myocardial infarction, angina, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, tachycardia, heart blocks
- Post cardiac catheterization, AKI, CKD, diabetes mellitus with ketoacidosis
- CVA, acute and chronic respiratory failure
- GI bleed, pneumonia
- Post-operative day one coronary artery bypass grafting, post-operative day one aortic valve surgery
- Post thoracic surgery, post neurosurgery
Procedures performed on unit:
- Foley placement, IV insertion, wound vac management
- DKA management, EKGs, DHT/NG placement
- Patient ambulation, ADLs
Required Certifications
- BLS and ACLS required
