Unit Specifics

  • Patient Ratios: 4:1
  • Unit staffing description:
    • Dayshift: unit secretary and 2-3 PCTs depending on census
    • Nightshift: 2-3 PCTs depending on census
  • Type of equipment: Welch Allyn dynamaps, Phillips telemetry, Phillips MP2, Pyxis, Alaris pumps, Hill-Rom beds, iMobile devices, MobiLab
  • Documentation system: Meditech
  • Scheduling requirements:
    • 3 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule
    • Self-scheduling (within reason to allow balanced staffing)
    • May request days off as needed prior to schedule closing
    • Schedule finalized 2 weeks in advance
    • Can accommodate block scheduling for night shift
  • Floating policy: Travel RNs float first; rotation based on oldest float date
  • Patient Experience requirements:
    • Heavy cardiac patient population
    • CV surgery patients transferred from ICU to PCU
    • Q6H head-to-toe assessments with full charting

Patient Population and Procedures

The PCU delivers highly individualized care to medical, cardiac, and surgical complex patients requiring intermediate care, including:

  • Sepsis, stroke, myocardial infarction, angina, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, tachycardia, heart blocks
  • Post cardiac catheterization, AKI, CKD, diabetes mellitus with ketoacidosis
  • CVA, acute and chronic respiratory failure
  • GI bleed, pneumonia
  • Post-operative day one coronary artery bypass grafting, post-operative day one aortic valve surgery
  • Post thoracic surgery, post neurosurgery

Procedures performed on unit:

  • Foley placement, IV insertion, wound vac management
  • DKA management, EKGs, DHT/NG placement
  • Patient ambulation, ADLs

Required Certifications

  • BLS and ACLS required

Requested Skill Set
