About the role

The Emergency Department Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical, and communication skills in delivering high-quality compassionate care to patients and families. The ED RN assesses patient need, identifies the urgent or emergent care priority, and collaboratively provides direct care, applies appropriate interventions, and evaluates patient progress.

This position is part-time (2x12s) with 2 on-call shifts in 4 weeks, including ER day/night/weekend/holiday rotation.

Responsibilities

• Connect with patient and family during triage, assess initial management needs, and assign priority of care in accordance with triage standards.
• Establish rapport, address comfort needs, listen carefully, assess nonverbal communication, and provide frequent updates.
• Conduct primary and secondary assessments for critical needs across all age groups, identifying deviations from norms and necessary interventions.
• Assess psychosocial needs, document and report suspicions of domestic violence or abuse, and reassess patient responses to treatment.
• Collaborate with team members to build trust, respect, and cooperation, delegating tasks consistent with individual scopes of practice.
• Prepare patients and families for diagnostic procedures and treatments, making appropriate referrals for post-emergency care.
• Provide patient/family education tailored to learning styles, ensuring understanding of discharge instructions and home care needs.
• Prioritize patient and family as the central focus of care, maintaining awareness of the patient's condition throughout the ED visit.
• Update patient communication boards and keep significant others informed of care processes and anticipated needs.
• Comply with infection prevention strategies to safeguard public safety.

Requirements

• BLS, ACLS, PALS, and Stroke Certification (Must be AHA or RQI).
• NYS RN Licensure.
• Two years of acute hospital experience as an RN.
• One year of ED hospital experience as an RN.

Skills

• BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS, NYS RN Licensure (Required).
• Two years of experience as a Registered Nurse, with at least one year in an ER environment.
