About the role

Medical Surgical (MS) Nurse, located in the healthcare facility, is responsible for providing compassionate, patient-centered care to diverse patient populations. The role involves managing post-operative patients, those with chronic conditions, and pediatric cases, utilizing Epic (Electronic Medical Records) systems, in a fast-paced acute care environment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage post-operative patients, those with chronic conditions, and pediatric cases
  • Read and interpret monitors and strips
  • Administer medications
  • Document and chart in Epic system
  • Float to other units as needed
  • Work independently within a team environment

Schedule

  • 12-hour day shifts, with weekends as scheduled
  • Shifts begin between 6:45 and 7:15 am
  • Minimum of 36 hours per week
  • Extra shifts may be available
  • Duration: 13 weeks

Required Qualifications

  • BLS (American Heart Association) certification
  • NIHSS certification
  • Minimum two years of experience in medical-surgical nursing
  • Valid license to practice in the state
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system
  • Ability to read and interpret monitors and strips
  • Strong medication administration skills
  • Ability to work independently within a team environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • PALS and ACLS certifications
  • Experience managing a variety of acute and post-operative patients including pediatric cases
  • Proficiency with Cpap, Bipap, high flow, and vents
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to float to other units as needed

Additional Information

  • Unit manages a 20-bed patient census with no more than five patients per nurse
  • Includes adult and pediatric patients
  • Requires float rotation
  • Orientation includes 3-5 days of unit-specific training with tour, policies review, and collaboration with education, pharmacy, and lab departments
  • Tele monitors are used, and RNs are expected to read their own strips
  • Charge nurses coordinate assignments without taking additional patient care responsibilities
  • Scrubs are provided
  • Documentation and charting are performed in Epic system
