Role Overview
We are seeking a Travel DS Engineer to support a government contract that requires travel up to three weeks at a time. This role provides onsite support for distribution systems, fiber optic infrastructure, and IT modernization initiatives. Candidates must reside in the US and will support daily onsite project activities. The ideal candidate will have experience supporting distribution systems engineering, IT infrastructure projects, fiber optic testing, and technical project execution in government environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, support, and maintain communications infrastructure and related technologies.
- Assess equipment and systems to verify compliance with established standards and requirements.
- Identify technical issues, report findings, and recommend corrective actions.
- Provide infrastructure assessments, recommendations, and technical solutions.
- Deliver training on products, systems, and technical specifications to internal and external stakeholders.
- Build and maintain strong customer relationships through effective technical support and service delivery.
- Support equipment maintenance activities across multiple infrastructure environments.
- Assist with the deployment of new technologies and system upgrades based on customer requirements.
Fiber Optic & Network Responsibilities
- Perform end-to-end testing of fiber optic cables using OTDRs, power meters, and related testing equipment.
- Analyze test results and document findings.
- Update network as-built records and documentation based on installation, splicing, and testing activities.
- Support distribution systems design efforts, including Inside Plant (ISP) and Outside Plant (OSP) environments.
- Provide technical recommendations to program and operations teams.
Project & Operational Support
- Coordinate with Government Points of Contact (POCs) regarding site access, personnel requirements, equipment logistics, and project execution activities.
- Support project schedules, milestones, and delivery objectives.
- Assist with stakeholder communications to ensure accurate, timely, and consistent project updates.
- Lead implementation efforts or manage defined work scopes for assigned site activities.
- Develop technical project plans, reports, proposals, and administrative documentation.
- Conduct planning activities and provide recommendations regarding task workload and resource requirements.
- Attend customer meetings and serve as a network engineering representative when required.
- Coordinate deliverables, project documentation, and technical products.
- Support quality assurance efforts across project activities.
- Review project requirements and contribute recommendations for future work initiatives.
Additional Responsibilities
- Provide technical, administrative, and operational support for assigned projects.
- Interact with vendors, government agencies, customers, and internal teams.
- Maintain current knowledge of relevant technologies and industry practices.
- Participate in special projects and mission-critical initiatives as assigned.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve project goals and operational objectives.
- Review team deliverables and provide feedback to support accurate production submissions.
- Communicate regularly with project team members regarding timelines, priorities, and deliverables.
Required Qualifications
Experience:
- 5+ years of experience in Distribution Systems Engineering, preferably within government environments.
- Experience supporting IT infrastructure upgrades, installations, and modernization efforts.
- Experience with fiber optic testing, troubleshooting, and documentation.
Technical Skills:
- Thorough understanding of wired network infrastructure and general IT functions.
- Knowledge of fiber optic technologies, testing procedures, and industry best practices.
- Ability to interpret technical procedures, engineering documentation, and government regulations.
- Experience developing and maintaining technical documentation and project records.
Skills & Abilities:
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative or virtual team environment.

- BICSI related certifications are desirable.

Schedule
Travel for 3 weeks at a time, 1 week off.
