About the role

TotalMed is seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) for an immediate travel opening in Charleston, SC, for the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU). This is a 13-week travel nursing assignment with 36 hours per week on 12-hour night shifts.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct care to pediatric patients with cardiovascular conditions, including those recovering from heart surgery, congenital heart defects, or severe arrhythmias
  • Continuously monitor vital signs, cardiac rhythms, oxygenation, and other critical parameters; assess patients for changes in condition and respond appropriately
  • Administer medications (including IV drips, blood products, and sedatives) according to protocol, monitor for side effects, and adjust dosages as needed
  • Assist with ventilator management, including non-invasive and invasive respiratory support, and ensure proper airway management
  • Assist with procedures like intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP), external pacemakers, or ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) as directed by the cardiology team
  • Provide clear, compassionate communication with patients' families, updating them on their child's condition, care plan, and prognosis; offer emotional support and education to family members
  • Respond swiftly to cardiac and respiratory emergencies, including code situations and rapid interventions in acute cardiovascular distress
  • Work alongside pediatric cardiologists, surgeons, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals in a collaborative environment to provide comprehensive care
  • Accurately document patient assessments, interventions, changes in condition, and family interactions in the electronic health record (EHR)
  • Educate families and caregivers on post-operative care, recovery expectations, and signs of complications that may require attention

Requirements

  • At least 1 year of experience as an RN in a PCICU or similar critical care setting
  • BLS and PALS certifications required
  • Additional certifications may be required before beginning an assignment
  • Must be eligible for state licensure
  • Ability to stand or walk for long periods; must be able to bend, stoop, and lift with proper body mechanics
  • Exceptional critical thinking skills, strong communication abilities, and ability to provide compassionate care under pressure
  • Comfortable working with critically ill pediatric patients and supporting families through emotionally challenging situations
