About the role

TotalMed is seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) for a travel nursing opening in Seattle, WA for the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU). The right RN should have at least 1 year of experience in a PCICU setting. As a PCICU Nurse, you will provide critical care to pediatric patients with congenital or acquired heart conditions, working closely with a multidisciplinary team to provide high-level care, monitor cardiovascular status, and support families through difficult times.

Responsibilities

  • Patient Care: Provide direct care to pediatric patients with cardiovascular conditions, including those recovering from heart surgery, congenital heart defects, or severe arrhythmias
  • Monitoring & Assessment: Continuously monitor vital signs, cardiac rhythms, oxygenation, and other critical parameters. Assess patients for changes in condition and respond appropriately
  • Medication Administration: Administer medications (including IV drips, blood products, and sedatives) according to protocol, monitor for side effects, and adjust dosages as needed
  • Ventilator Management: Assist with ventilator management, including non-invasive and invasive respiratory support, and ensure proper airway management
  • Cardiac Interventions: Assist with procedures like intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP), external pacemakers, or ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) as directed by the cardiology team
  • Family Communication: Provide clear, compassionate communication with patients' families, updating them on their child's condition, care plan, and prognosis. Offer emotional support and education to family members
  • Emergency Response: Respond swiftly to cardiac and respiratory emergencies, including code situations and rapid interventions in acute cardiovascular distress
  • Collaboration: Work alongside pediatric cardiologists, surgeons, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals in a collaborative environment to provide comprehensive care
  • Documentation: Accurately document patient assessments, interventions, changes in condition, and family interactions in the electronic health record (EHR)
  • Patient Education: Educate families and caregivers on post-operative care, recovery expectations, and signs of complications that may require attention

Requirements

  • At least one year of experience as an RN in a PCICU or similar critical care setting
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Must be eligible for state licensure
  • Additional certifications may be required before beginning an assignment

Schedule

  • Duration: 13 weeks
  • 36 hours per week
  • Shift: 12 hours, days
