About the role

Medical Solutions is seeking a travel nurse RN CVICU for a travel nursing job in Peoria, Illinois.

Specialty and facility details

  • Specialty: CVICU
  • Discipline: RN
  • Unit size: 20 beds, all private, all monitored
  • Nurse–Patient Ratios: 1:1, 1:2, 2:1 depending on patient acuity

Patient population and diagnoses

  • Post open heart surgical patients: CABG, Valves, CABG/Valve, Dissections, AAA, Vascular procedures, Carotids
  • Post cardiovascular procedures: STEMI, Unstable angina, Unstable N-STEMI, Cardiogenic Shock, Cardiomyopathy
  • Targeted Temperature Management (Hypothermia), Transcutaneous pacing, Transvenous pacing
  • Severe heart failure, TAVRs, cardiac-related events requiring ICU care
  • Ventilated patients, overflow patients from other ICUs including COVID patients
  • Soon to come: Post VAD placement, Post heart transplant patient

Specialty intervention equipment

  • IABPs, Impellas, Swan Ganz, ECMO, External Pacemakers, CRRT
  • Lines: PICC, Midlines, CVC, Swans, Arterial Lines (radial and femoral)

Required certifications

  • BLS required
  • ACLS preferred
  • CCRN a plus

Required experience and skills

  • At least 2 solid years of CVICU experience
  • Ability to interpret strips
  • Strong assessment skills, critical thinking, communication, organization, teamwork, compassion
  • Ability to follow protocols and orders as written
  • Motivation, ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment
  • Time management, positive attitude and behavior

Medication management

  • Titratable drips: dopamine, dobutamine, levophed, epi, neo, vasopressin, cleviprex, propofol, fentanyl, versed, insulin, heparin, esmolol
  • Set-rate drips: some drips are set rate, go by protocol or titrate by order written

Staffing and support

  • Charge nurse: 24/7; charge nurses may take an assignment
  • House supervisor: 24/7
  • Patient Care Techs (PCTs): ratios can run 1:12–1:15, sometimes more depending on staffing
  • Providers: CV APNs/PAs and CCS APNs/PAs majority of the time; providers on call
  • Respiratory therapists: 24/7
  • Respiratory equipment: ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, heated high flow, nitric oxide
  • Monitor techs: available; all patients connected to Philips monitoring; RNs expected to read and interpret strips

Shift and scheduling

  • Shift length: 12 hours (7a–7p or 7p–7a)
  • Self-scheduling: not allowed for non-AHU Mission Partners; no block scheduling
  • Weekend requirements: every other weekend; day shift weekends are Saturday and Sunday; night shift weekends are Friday and Saturday
  • Holiday requirements: every other holiday
  • Floating requirements: float to every level of care; travelers expected to take a full team

Dress code

  • No particular color scrubs; must be appropriate in appearance
  • Scrubs not provided

Additional notes

  • Proficient in all cardiovascular ICU components with the exception of immediate post op (bonus if experienced)
  • Daily use of swans, CVC, and art lines on majority of patients
  • Frequent use of temporary pacemakers and multiple titratable drips
  • High volume of ventilated patients; items could be on one patient and sometimes two of these in one assignment
