Responsibilities

  • Follow all policies and procedures associated with the coding classification schemes to assign diagnostic and procedural codes to the trauma patient population.
  • Participate in the American College of Surgeons accreditation/site survey process by assisting with compilation, preparation, and presentation of data.
  • Support and participate in the research efforts of the Division of Trauma and Cooper University Hospital.
  • Assist with data validation and report preparation and generation as needed.
  • Help create an Institutional Data Dictionary and provide timely review.
  • Train new employees and oversee monthly registrar education.
  • Abstract data from patient charts in an accurate and timely manner with minimal variances.

Requirements

  • Previous experience as a Trauma Registrar or similar health-related experience (e.g., RN, EMT, CNA, medical coder, HIM) required.
  • Previous experience in Trauma, chart auditing, AAAM Coding, ICD-9 & 10 codes, and medical procedure coding strongly preferred.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Medical Terminology Course or equivalent experience.

Qualifications

  • Per the American College of Surgeons Regulations for Trauma Registrars, each registrar must complete a Trauma Registry Course, ICD-10 Coding Course, and AAAM Coding Course within one year of hire.
  • Each Trauma Registrar must maintain eight trauma-related continuing education hours each year.
