Trap Head Coach

About the Role

The head coach instructs athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training to achieve individual and team success while fostering character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride in student athletes. The role involves upgrading knowledge through clinics, observations, and consultation, and managing community and parental expectations regarding sportsmanship and performance.

Qualifications

• Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
• Previous successful coaching experience in the assigned sport (major sports).
• Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and commitment to staying current with new theories and procedures.
• Serves as a positive role model for student athletes through instruction and actions.

Reports To

The athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals.

Supervises

The head coach advises, coordinates, and supports a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in collaboration with the athletic director and respective principals.

Responsibilities

General Duties

• Implements all athletic policies approved by the Plainwell Community Schools' Board of Education.
• Knowledgeable of system, state, and league regulations; ensures consistent implementation and interpretation for staff.
• Follows proper administrative channels for requests or grievances.
• Attends all required public, staff, and departmental meetings.

Staff Responsibilities

• Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff.
• Designs and conducts conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure program awareness.
• Encourages professional growth through clinic attendance.
• Delegates duties, supervises implementation, and evaluates assistant coaches at season's end.
• Maintains discipline, resolves grievances, and works to improve staff morale and cooperation.
• Performs additional duties as assigned by the athletic director or principal.

Administrative Duties

• Assists the athletic director with scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special events.
• Prepares for scheduled sport events or practices and adheres to facility times.
• Coordinates with maintenance and school employees.
• Provides documentation for physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
• Ensures proper safeguards for equipment and facilities.
• Advises the athletic director and recommends policy or procedural changes.

Student Responsibilities

• Mentors athletes to develop and demonstrate character traits such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
• Monitors student athletes' grades and conduct.
• Provides guidance and safeguards during practices, games, and travel.
• Establishes and enforces training rules and sport-specific regulations.
• Manages injury reporting, medical attention, and emergency procedures.
• Completes and submits injury reports within 24 hours.
• Directs student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
• Enforces discipline, follows due process procedures, and contacts parents when necessary.
• Assists athletes with college or advanced educational opportunities.

Finance and Equipment

• Participates in budgeting with the athletic director and establishes requirements for the next season.
• Recommends equipment guidelines, including type, style, color, or technical specifications.
• Operates within budget appropriations and is accountable for all equipment.
• Collects costs for lost or unreturned equipment.
• Manages issuing, storing, and reconditioning of equipment; submits annual inventory.
• Properly marks and identifies equipment before issuing or storing.
• Monitors equipment rooms and coaches' offices; authorizes access.
• Ensures athletes are only in authorized areas at appropriate times.
• Inspects locker rooms before and after practices and games for cleanliness.
• Responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of sport-specific equipment.
• Secures facilities (doors, lights, windows, locks) if custodians are not present.
• Instills respect for equipment and school property in athletes.

Public Relations

• Organizes preseason meetings for parents, coaches, players, and guests.
• Promotes the sport within the school by recruiting athletes and externally through media, little league programs, or other feasible methods.
• Ensures the quality, effectiveness, and validity of all oral or written releases to local media.
• Maintains positive public relations with media, booster clubs, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
• Provides information to media concerning schedules, tournaments, and results.
