Transportation Supervisor

About the role

The Transportation Supervisor oversees the day-to-day operational activity to meet Univar Solutions’ transportation customer service and financial targets effectively and efficiently. The role is to be the main site point of contact for Transportation execution and implementation of activities led by the District Transportation Manager (DTM) and other Transportation regional and department strategy initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Direct manager supervising drivers and ensures drivers are dispatched and return safely.
  • Manages labor hours and consumable supplies within the forecast budget.
  • Prepares driver work schedules including extra workdays, overtime, and shift hours as needed.
  • Maintains on-time service levels and reviews delivery functions and productivity KPI reports to supervise and take action on ways to improve dispatch routing or increase truck utilization.
  • Ensures driver routes are optimized and driver workflow is efficient.
  • Affords assistance in the hiring process for new drivers.
  • Investigates and responds to customer complaints.
  • Occasionally handles after-hour calls.
  • Interprets, trains, and consistently implements Company policies, protocols, and procedures including but not limited to food safety, DOT, EHS, internal audit, record keeping, etc.
  • Ensures Driver compliance with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies (i.e., DOT, OSHA, etc.) and maintains that electronic logs are kept current and accurate.
  • Collaborates with the Safety department to aid in training, conducting associate observations, updating preferred work methods, conducting accident investigations to identify root cause, and routine safety inspections.
  • Responsible for record keeping and driver credentials (HazMat, tanker endorsements, DOT physicals, Federal drug testing, etc.) are completed on time.
  • Works with DTM and other personnel if and when a safety spill or release has occurred at the customer site, enroute to delivery, or on-site.
  • Organizes required repairs with proper departments as necessary.
  • Responsible for licensing, registration, and preventative maintenance of the private fleet.
  • Ensures equipment inspections are completed on time.
  • Interacts with key maintenance vendors and Element to ensure quotes and work are completed effectively.
  • Is responsible for the proper selection, utilization, and maintenance of company assets in support of the Transportation department.
  • Maintains maintenance and repair spending and communicates with DTM on areas of overspending or areas of improvement to keep cost spend within budget.
  • Solves tactical issues with carriers to ensure on-time pickup and collaborates with the District Transportation Planner on carrier enroute or delivery delays.
  • Provides feedback to the District Transportation Manager on carrier performance in preparation for QBRs.
  • Makes recommendations for improvement, specifically in areas of efficiency, cost reduction, and assists with the implementation of effective service delivery changes.
  • Visits customer locations and meets with customers to address issues and assess delivery difficulty as needed.
  • Engages and leads individual and team discussions and meetings.
  • Applies all relevant policies in a consistent, timely, and objective manner.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED required
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, not required
  • 5 plus years of supervisory leadership experience
  • Knowledgeable in DOT, FMCSA, and Hours of Service regulations
  • Experience managing and dispatching drivers
  • Organizational and time management skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic understanding of Transportation Management software and SAP preferred
  • Solid understanding of Microsoft Office applications
  • Solid understanding of chemical distribution facility operation preferred
  • May require HazMat certification, TWIC credentials
  • Previous experience working in a unionized environment desired

This is a second shift position, from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
