Transportation Operations Technician II

About the role

The Transportation Operations Technician II performs highway maintenance tasks such as repairing guardrails, cutting trees and brush, patching roads, picking litter, ditching, and assisting with vehicle and equipment maintenance. During winter months, the position involves plowing, salting, and considerable overtime during snowfall or emergencies. Employees may be required to report to work outside of their regular schedule and must be reachable by phone.

Responsibilities

• Repair guardrails, cut trees and brush, patch roads, pick litter, and perform ditching
• Plow and salt roads during winter months; overtime required during heavy snowfall or emergencies
• Assist with vehicle and equipment maintenance
• Operate medium or heavy equipment such as graders, excavators, and backhoes
• Work outdoors in extreme weather conditions
• Lift materials and use tools commonly used in maintenance work
• Work on or near heavy equipment, hazardous materials, and roadside debris
• Work on roads with moving traffic; hazards are always present

Requirements

• One (1) year of work experience in construction, equipment operation, or related manual labor, including either:
  • One season of operating a snowplow with wings, OR
  • Six (6) months of operating medium or heavy equipment (e.g., graders, excavators, backhoes)
• OR successful completion of original probation as a Transportation Operations Technician I and possession of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement
• Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required at hire
• Must live within reasonable proximity of assigned workstation
• Must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker Endorsement within the first six months of employment
• Must complete all Vermont Traffic and Transportation Center (VTTC) required coursework within one (1) year or be enrolled
• Non-original probationary employees must obtain the required CDL license prior to the completion of six (6) months of service
• Participation in a random drug and alcohol-testing program is required
• Must provide detailed employment history for the past 10 years if applying for a commercial motor vehicle operator position, including:
  • Names and addresses of previous employers for which you operated a commercial motor vehicle
  • Employment dates
  • Reason for leaving employment

Preferred Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
