Transportation Operations Technician II

About the role
The Agency of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Operations Technician II to perform highway maintenance tasks such as repairing guardrails, cutting trees and brush, patching roads, picking litter, ditching, and assisting with vehicle and equipment maintenance. During winter months, the position involves plowing, salting, and overtime as required. This role offers excellent benefits, career development opportunities, and reimbursement for CDL renewals. Responsibilities
- Repair guardrails, cut trees and brush, patch roads, pick litter, and perform ditching
- Assist with plowing, salting, and winter maintenance (overtime required during heavy snowfall or emergencies)
- Support vehicle and equipment maintenance
- Operate medium or heavy equipment (e.g., graders, excavators, backhoes)
- Report to work outside of scheduled hours during emergencies and remain reachable by phone
Environmental Factors
- Exposure to extreme outdoor weather conditions
- Work on or near heavy equipment, hazardous materials, and roadside debris
- Potential exposure to blood or airborne pathogens
- Hazards from moving traffic while working on roads
- Participation in a random drug and alcohol-testing program is required
- Considerable overtime, especially during winter months, is a condition of employment
Requirements
- One (1) year of work experience in construction, equipment operation, or related manual labor, including either:
- One season of operating a snowplow with wings, or
- Six (6) months of operating medium or heavy equipment (e.g., graders, excavators, backhoes)
- OR successful completion of original probation as a Transportation Operations Technician I and possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement
- Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required at hire
- Must obtain a Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement within the first six months of employment
- Must live within reasonable proximity of assigned workstation
- Must complete all VTTC required coursework within one (1) year or be enrolled
- Non-original probationary employees must obtain the required CDL prior to completing six (6) months of service
