Transportation Operations Technician I

The Agency of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Operations Technician I. This position involves various tasks related to highway maintenance, including:

  • Repairing guardrails
  • Cutting trees/brush
  • Patching roads
  • Picking litter
  • Ditching

During the winter months, this position assists with plowing and salting, and overtime may be required. Entry-level positions offer excellent benefits, opportunities for career development, and a CDL training program. For more information, watch this brief video.

Environmental Factors:

  • Working in extreme outdoor weather conditions
  • May be required to report to work outside of regular hours
  • Must be reachable by phone
  • Exposure to blood and airborne pathogens
  • Risks associated with heavy equipment, hazardous materials, and roadside hazards
  • Use of tools and equipment for maintenance work
  • Lifting materials commonly used in maintenance work
  • Participation in a random drug and alcohol-testing program
  • Considerable overtime work, particularly during the winter months

Minimum Qualifications:

  • No education or experience required
  • At least 18 years old

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Special Requirements:

  • A valid driver's license is required
  • Must live within reasonable proximity of assigned workstation
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required for the successful completion of original probation
  • Must complete all VTTC required coursework within six (6) months or be enrolled
