About the role
Under general supervision, this position is responsible for the direct driver management and supervision of a midsize driver count, ensuring safe and timely service movement of freight, load assignment, and providing best-in-class customer service. The role ensures compliance with DOT regulations and company regulations while working with internal and external contacts to plan, route, monitor, and deliver freight and loads. The transportation manager must be able to work any shift to satisfy operational demands, including day, night, and weekend shifts, and ensure coverage is maintained.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain positive professional relationships with drivers and safety teams to minimize turnover and maximize productivity
- Fill in for absent or unavailable personnel and assist with special projects related to optimizing fleet operations and achieving profitability
- Utilize personnel management, including training and orientation of drivers and/or employees, and provide assistance with internal and third-party systems
- Conduct analysis of fleet operations and profitability, recommend continuous improvements, determine and measure key performance indicators, and create and present customer-specific reporting and financial analysis
- Manage inventory, assets, customer pools, and driver assignments to balance equipment in the market
- Perform administrative duties such as payroll, driver counseling, accident reviews, pay issue resolution, invoicing, and operational or financial reporting
- Manage yard operations including equipment inspection, parts replacement (e.g., mud flaps), repairs, and coordination with maintenance to ensure timely preventative maintenance and resolution of safety-related mechanical issues
- Work with drivers, customers, and company personnel to resolve service issues, routing and planning challenges, mechanical problems, and accessorial pay-related issues
- Maintain the company’s safety culture through daily driver safety messages, monthly safety briefings, quarterly driver training, annual reviews, and enforcement of company policies and DOT compliance
- Assign loads and plan, route, and monitor freight movement to ensure safe, on-time service and meet customer requirements, including managing exceptions and adjusting driver ETAs based on pick-up and delivery schedules and environmental factors
Qualifications
- High School Diploma/GED and 2–3 years of experience in transportation/logistics, business administration, account management, or equivalent military experience, with the ability to work across multiple shifts including nights and/or weekends
- OR demonstration of the following skills and abilities through education, certifications, military, or other experiences:
- Strong professional communication skills applied internally and externally
- Proven experience in establishing and maintaining healthy working relationships
- Experience fostering strong customer relationships via delivery of commitments, open communication, and ongoing feedback/improvement
- Ability to process information with high levels of accuracy
- Ability to analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Ability to manage multiple competing priorities
- Ability to consistently travel to account and customer locations
- Ability to adapt to a dynamic work environment and shifting priorities
- Experience in holding people accountable and conducting difficult conversations
- Ability to perform in a stressful and high-pressure work environment
- Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Transportation/Logistics, Supply Chain, or related field and 1–2 years of relevant experience
