Filling several limited-term winter maintenance positions that may last from October to April, but with no guarantee. Positions will work full-time hours during the limited-term assignment.

About the role

This position performs maintenance of state trunk lines, structures, and right-of-ways in the Superior Region. Duties include surface, roadside general maintenance, and winter maintenance activities. You will operate various types of equipment and participate in the Transportation Maintenance Worker (TMW) work element program. This position requires travel to work sites throughout the Region, including overnight travel.

Winter work schedule includes afternoon, night, and weekend shift assignments with scheduled and unscheduled overtime. You will operate a vehicle or vehicle/trailer combination with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more (e.g., dump truck, snowplow, etc.).

Responsibilities

  • Perform surface, roadside, and general maintenance activities
  • Conduct winter maintenance activities
  • Operate various types of equipment
  • Participate in the Transportation Maintenance Worker (TMW) work element program
  • Travel to work sites throughout the Superior Region, including overnight stays
  • Work afternoon, night, and weekend shifts with scheduled and unscheduled overtime
  • Operate vehicles or vehicle/trailer combinations with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more

Requirements

  • Possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) at the time of hire
  • For Transportation Maintenance Worker E8: Satisfactory completion of the MDOT TMW Work Element training and certification program, approved by the MDOT Statewide Work Element Coordinator
  • Some positions may require a commercial Pesticide Applicators license in compliance with the Pesticide Control Act of 1976
  • Pass pre-employment/pre-appointment drug test and physical (if applicable)
  • Subject to random drug and alcohol testing during employment
  • Criminal and driving records will be checked

Qualifications

Education: Typically acquired through completion of high school.

  • Transportation Maintenance Worker 6: No specific type or amount of experience is required.
  • Transportation Maintenance Worker 7: One year of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 6 or Laborer E6 with experience in roadway, roadside, bridge, or sign maintenance, or pavement marking.
  • Transportation Maintenance Worker E8: Two years of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 7; or, one year of skilled trades experience at the E9 level.

Pay

The salary range reflects the minimum rate at the entry (6) level through the maximum rate at the experienced (E8) level. Based on education and experience, candidates will be reviewed to determine the appropriate level.
