Seasonal Transportation Maintenance Worker
About the Role
Dakota County Transportation Department is seeking a motivated individual for a full-time, temporary seasonal maintenance position. The role involves operating trucks and equipment for snow and ice removal, as well as performing maintenance, repair, and construction tasks on Dakota County roadways. This is a non-benefit earning position with no holiday pay included.
Regular hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with overtime and shift adjustments required as weather conditions demand. Temporary staff are typically employed from early November through early April.
Responsibilities
- Operates trucks for snow and ice removal, including hauling sand, mixing sand and salt, plowing, winging snow, sanding, and salting roads.
- Performs routine maintenance tasks such as patching and crack filling bituminous and concrete surfaces, sealing patches, spot graveling, cleaning/sweeping bridge decks and pavement, and debris removal.
- Provides 24-hour emergency response to weather-related events, including snow, ice, severe storms, flooding, traffic hazards, accidents, and spills.
- Operates loaders and other highway equipment.
- Performs miscellaneous maintenance activities as assigned.
Requirements
- High School graduate or GED.
- Valid Class B CDL driver's license with air brake endorsement.
Preferred Qualifications
- Snow plowing experience.
- Previous truck and equipment operation experience.
- Ability to report to the Empire Transportation Facility within 30 minutes during snow emergencies or events.

Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions and involves strenuous physical tasks. The role requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, balancing, bending, stooping, twisting, and reaching. Repetitive arm movements, frequent hand grasping, and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds are required. Rarely, lifting or carrying greater than 50 pounds may be necessary, and team lifts are encouraged.
Exposures may include changing weather, uneven or slippery surfaces, heights, dust, dirt, oil, grease, solvents, fumes, noise, sharp edges, and hazards associated with an equipment repair shop. Sensory demands include hearing, speech, near and far vision, tactile, and spatial perception.
Equipment used includes hand and power tools, shovels, saws, chainsaws, grinders, personal computers, personal safety equipment, and various light and heavy construction equipment.
Pay
$29.00 - $30.00/hour (DOQ).
Schedule
Full-time, temporary position typically running from early November through early April. Regular hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with overtime and shift adjustments required as weather conditions demand.
