About the role

The Texas Department of Transportation seeks Transportation Maintenance Technicians (TMT I or TMT II) to maintain vital state infrastructure. This role involves performing routine transportation operations or maintenance support work, including roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, preventive and minor maintenance, traffic control, and assisting the public during emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in identifying, repairing, and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports, and posts; performs basic welding as needed.
  • Supports local law enforcement at accident sites; assists stranded motorists.
  • Plants and maintains vegetation; mows rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs repairs and erects guard rails, highway markers, and signs.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as motor graders, excavators, bulldozers, cranes, herbicide trucks, asphalt paving machines, and profiling/milling machines.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections, routine servicing, and minor repairs on equipment.
  • Communicates effectively; follows verbal and written instructions.

Requirements

No formal education required. Experience includes: No experience required for TMT I; 1 year experience for TMT II. Must have a valid US driver's license and a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A" License within 120 days of employment. Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis.

Qualifications

  • Valid US driver’s license at the time of application.
  • Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Considerable knowledge of the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Proficient skill in using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade.
  • Ability to communicate effectively; follow verbal and written instructions.

  • Transportation Maintenance Technician I - A16 - $40,918.00 - $61,130.00
  • Transportation Maintenance Technician II - A17 - $42,976.00 - $64,469.00
