About the role

Gonzalez Companies is a partner-managed firm providing comprehensive planning, design, and construction management services to water, sewer, and utility districts; departments of transportation; and municipalities. We are seeking a Transportation/Highway Construction Inspector to serve clients and communities in Southeastern Missouri, including Cape Girardeau, Sikeston, Jackson, and surrounding areas.

Responsibilities

  • Perform on-site inspection of construction projects including highways, bridges, and roadways to ensure compliance with project specifications, DOT standards, and safety regulations.
  • Review construction plans, shop drawings, and materials to verify conformance with approved designs and applicable codes.
  • Document construction activities daily through detailed reports, photographs, and field notes.
  • Conduct material sampling and testing (asphalt, concrete, soils, aggregates) according to DOT procedures.
  • Monitor contractor activities to ensure adherence to safety protocols, quality standards, and schedule requirements.
  • Coordinate with engineers, contractors, and project managers to resolve field issues efficiently.
  • Maintain accurate records of project progress, materials used, and any non-compliance issues.
  • Participate in pre-construction and progress meetings to communicate inspection findings and recommendations.
  • Identify, document, and report discrepancies or deficiencies to the project engineer or manager promptly.
  • Stay current with DOT construction standards, specifications, and procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, or related field preferred.
  • Experience in transportation or civil construction inspection (1–5 years preferred, depending on position level).
  • Familiarity with DOT construction standards, specifications, and inspection procedures.
  • Knowledge of materials testing procedures for asphalt, concrete, soils, and aggregates.
  • Strong understanding of construction safety standards and field inspection protocols.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with inspection software or databases.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to produce clear, concise inspection reports.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to project sites.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently in a field environment.
