About the Role
The purpose of this position is to provide oversight, scheduling, equipment safety monitoring and repair, staff training and personnel supervision for the pupil transportation services of Alamo Navajo Community School.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum of two years supervising and/or managing a transportation related program or business, including vehicle maintenance, inventory, and supervision.
- Ability to understand, speak, read, and write English sufficiently to receive, discuss, and follow instructions, read road maps and instruction manuals, and complete reports.
- Sound working knowledge of:
- Motor vehicle safety practices;
- Sand, mud, and rough road driving requirements, limitations, and effects on vehicles;
- Vehicle mechanics, body and framework, and repair;
- Vehicle service and maintenance requirements and procedures.
- Ability to safely perform all types of vehicular service and repair operations on, in, and under school vehicles.
- Minimum of two years’ successful experience as a School Bus Driver, at least partially on rural, unpaved bus routes, within the past five years, with no record of conviction or dismissal for a moving traffic violation involving serious risk to safety. (May be waived for one year while on probationary status if applicant lacks driving experience or Commercial Driver’s License.)
- Driving record insurable without additional penalty premium under ANSB Inc.’s automotive liability insurance program.
- Annual physical examination and certification by a licensed Physician meeting New Mexico State physical and mental qualifications for a School Bus Operator.
- Ability to lift weights up to 100 lbs.
- Demonstrable knowledge in:
- Implementation and maintenance of internal control systems, inventories, and account management;
- Dealing with and resolving personnel issues such as hostile work environment, conflict of interest, and customer relations;
- Debit and revenue structures and management systems;
- EPA regulations regarding disposal of oil, CFCs, and other regulated materials;
- Budgeting and different budgeting systems;
- Cost/benefit or life cycle costing analysis.
Additional Preferences
- Satisfactory completion of a Supervisory or Regulatory Level, New Mexico Pupil Transportation Institute course within the past three years.
- Satisfactory completion of an auto mechanics/body repair or welding course within the past five years.
- Ability to understand and speak the Navajo language in normal conversation.
Credentials, Licenses, and Certificates
- New Mexico Commercial Driver’s License (may be waived for one year for qualified applicants with proven supervisory experience).
- U.S. General Services Administration Bus Driver’s License.
- Successful completion of an accredited Defensive Driving course every three years.
Responsibilities
- Supports and efficiently carries out responsibilities in accordance with Alamo Navajo School Board, Inc. Policies and Procedures and New Mexico State Educational Competencies.
- Represents Alamo Navajo School Board Inc. professionally to enhance community understanding of the program.
- Protects the confidentiality of student and personnel information.
- Maintains high personal standards of professional and ethical conduct.
- Supervises all student transportation personnel in accordance with the Alamo Navajo School Board Personnel Policy Manual.
- Establishes and modifies school bus routes for safe, effective, and economical transportation of students.
- Makes and enforces decisions regarding special equipment use, such as tire chains, based on weather and road conditions.
- Oversees driver inspections of vehicles before and after trips, reviews inspection sheets, and trains drivers as necessary.
- Conducts unannounced spot-checks on vehicle safety and emergency equipment.
- Assigns and dispatches school buses and drivers over established routes in consultation with the Superintendent and Principal.
- Ensures all dispatched vehicles have ANSB Insurance coverage in force.
- Keeps permanent records of all vehicle assignments and repairs.
- Participates in decisions regarding school closure due to road and weather conditions.
- Operates ANSB Inc. vehicles for incidental trips necessary for servicing and repair or other school business.
- Serves as a substitute Bus Driver on regular runs if necessary (waived if obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License).
- May operate a School Bus on student activity trips if possessing a Commercial Driver’s License.
- Road tests all applicants over typical routes to evaluate performance and recommends hiring based on applicant performance.
- Conducts systematic driving skill evaluations of all drivers and recommends training as needed.
- Designs, organizes, and conducts informal safety training and unannounced bus evacuation drills.
- Adheres to New Mexico State Regulations and ANSB Inc. policies governing school bus operations.
- Performs thorough monthly inspections of vehicle safety and mechanical soundness, keeping permanent records of findings.
- Reports abnormal wear or damage to vehicles and requires formal accident reports for damage beyond normal wear and tear.
- Determines if vehicles have been structurally or mechanically abused or neglected and reports findings to supervisor.
- Removes unsafe vehicles from the dispatch list and arranges for repairs or alternate vehicles.
- Schedules vehicles for shop service and repair, coordinating with GSA motor pool personnel for GSA-owned vehicles.
- Road tests all vehicles after repair to ensure satisfactory condition before returning to use.
- Supervises the Alamo Navajo School automotive repair facility, ensuring proper use of tools and equipment and enforcing shop safety regulations.
- Maintains an inventory of vehicle repair tools and equipment and reports missing or broken items.
- Prepares invoices for billing maintenance work and maintains records for accounting purposes.
- Makes recommendations to supervisor regarding equipment purchases and coordinates repair parts purchases through the Transportation Clerk.
- Monitors and reports on road conditions, recommending school closure or road repair services as needed.
- Completes all required reports, records, checklists, operational logs, and other documentation.

Grade I on the ANSB, Inc., General Salary Scale.
Schedule
40 hours per week, scheduled hours to be assigned. One-hour lunch break.
