Responsibilities

  • Performs certified inspection work in asphalt, concrete, earthwork, and foundations.
  • Interprets and ensures compliance with SCDOT standards, specifications, standard drawings, construction manuals, and plans.
  • Completes and submits reports, notes, and daily diaries to project managers within required time limits.
  • Ensures all assigned work and office paperwork is performed in a timely manner.
  • Performs construction staking as necessary.
  • Samples materials as specified.
  • Assists other inspectors as needed.
  • Prepares field notes, daily work reports, erosion control reports, and wage regulation reports in a timely manner.
  • Enters accurate data and quantities in the AASHTO Ware program.
  • Performs and verifies proper installation and maintenance of traffic and erosion control measures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma and two (2) years of progressively responsible engineering technician-related experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
  • Attainment of a Technician Certification in accordance with the SCDOT Technician Certification Policy may substitute for six (6) months of directly related experience.
  • A valid motor vehicle driver’s license is required.

Physical Demands

  • Sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • Bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling.
  • Driving and walking for extended periods, including treading rough and uneven terrain.
  • Working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • May require working outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather or departmental-related emergencies.
  • Exposure to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise.
