About the Role

This is a re-advertisement. Previous applicants are still being considered for this position and do not need to re-apply. Assist with weekly progress and final inspections of encroachment permits, maintenance contracts, and strategic goals for compliance with SCDOT Guidelines. Reports findings to supervisor as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Performs daytime inspections (bi-annual primary routes, and annual secondary routes) in accordance with EDM 8, including routine inspections of shoulder/ditch, high/low shoulder plans, pavement markings, signs, dead trees, drainage structures, sidewalks, curbs, and gutters.
  • Inspects work performed by maintenance contractors, including mowing cycles (primary and secondary routes), street sweeping, and other maintenance contracts as needed.
  • Completes written daily diaries, enters daily data in HMMS, responds to and corrects HMMS data, tracks and files pertinent maintenance contract information, and updates reports.
  • Assists in formal walk-through inspections of all guardrails, cable barriers, and crash attenuators within Beaufort County, complying with EDM 42 and Department manual guidelines.
  • Completes inspection forms, maintains detailed HMMS daily work reports and work requests.
  • Ensures proper processing of internal and external damage claims and FOIA requests.
  • Verifies accuracy of contract quantities, purchase orders, and invoices.
  • Assists during inclement weather and other emergencies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma and one (1) year of related experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
  • A motor vehicle operator’s license is required.

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods.
  • Occasional travel, bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling.
  • Driving and walking for extended periods, navigating rough and uneven terrain, working near traffic, and exposure to natural environmental hazards.
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Working outside of normal schedule during inclement weather and emergencies.
  • Exposure to outdoor environments in all weather conditions and noise.
  • Working in heavy traffic and all weather conditions, subject to dust, excessive noise, and traffic hazards.
  • Requires lifting, standing, stooping, bending, and physical strain.

Schedule

Works 40 hours per week under normal conditions, with overtime as necessary, especially during inclement weather and emergencies.
