Transportation Engineering Associate II (61034221)

About the Role

Monitors highway and bridge construction projects (e.g., asphalt, concrete, earth bases, macadam, pipe, under drain, pile driving, form setting, reinforced steel, and compaction with nuclear gauge). Oversees contractor's productivity, utility conflicts, project scope, and other construction-related impacts. Ensures all projects maintain a safe work zone for motorists and construction personnel. Provides contractors and inspectors with proper installation, inspection, and maintenance instructions for erosion prevention and sediment control devices on SCDOT construction sites.

Responsibilities

• Prepares and reviews field notes and material sampling reports, including final plans.
• Creates daily work reports in Site Manager and AASHTO-Ware Project, utility diaries, monthly estimates worksheets, daily asphalt roadway reports, erosion and traffic control reports, sample cards, and other necessary paperwork.
• Computes areas of cross-sections and calculates volumes.
• Serves as the SCDOT representative to the public when discussing construction projects and plans.
• Interprets and explains construction plans and contract notes to inspectors.
• Uses surveying software with data collector and total station to check contractor's lines and grades.
• Computes and creates volumes of borrow and waste pits.
• Supervises sampling and testing of construction materials to ensure compliance with specifications.
• Obtains material certifications as needed and maintains material samples and certification log books for projects.
• Assists the Resident Construction Engineer as required.
• Maintains all current technician certifications and obtains additional certifications as assigned.

Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management and one (1) year of engineering or construction management work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator's license.

Physical Demands

• Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
• May require travel, bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling.
• Driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain.
• Working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
• Exposure to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise.
• May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.
